Meet Our Co-Founders
The intersection of molecular biology, artificial intelligence, computational science, and large-scale cluster computing.
Designed Biologics was founded by two researchers whose complementary expertise in molecular biology and computer science helped establish the foundation of our peptide discovery technology.
Co-Founder
Dr. Ashkan Golshani is a pioneer in the field of AI-guided peptide design and a Full Professor and Director of the Systems Biology Group at Carleton University. He also serves as a Principal Investigator in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
With more than two decades of dedicated research in peptide engineering, Dr. Golshani's work uniquely integrates advanced molecular genetics, artificial intelligence, and high-performance supercomputing. He has been a driving force behind developing advanced methods to map and manipulate Protein-Protein Interactions (PPIs), which serve as the foundation for modern target-specific drug discovery. Notably, in 2008, he led the team that computationally predicted the first-ever protein interaction map of a cell. In early 2020, leveraging Canada’s most powerful supercomputers, his laboratory engineered a pioneering series of synthetic peptides capable of neutralizing SARS-CoV-2 with a 75% efficacy rate.
Beyond these therapeutic breakthroughs, Dr. Golshani has made fundamental contributions to genomics, including the characterization and naming of more than a dozen previously orphan genes. As a frequent keynote and seminar speaker at major scientific and industry venues internationally, Dr. Golshani is a recognized voice in connecting pure, basic research with applied clinical translation. His current initiatives continue to push the boundaries of AI-guided platforms to discover novel, precision diagnostics and therapeutics that minimize toxicity while tackling complex human diseases.
Co-Founder
Dr. Frank Dehne is a distinguished researcher in data science and parallel computing, and Chancellor's Professor (Emeritus) at Carleton University. Most of his work is interdisciplinary and collaborative. Using large scale cloud computing systems and GPUs, Professor Dehne and his collaborators build high-performance computing systems for solving computationally hard problems in bioinformatics, business data analytics, and computational engineering.
Professor Dehne and his collaborators have published more than 180 research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. Their work has received more than 6,000 citations. Professor Dehne has received many research grants and awards. He has served on several editorial boards and many program committees.
According to the Stanford-Elsevier list of the world’s most-cited scholars, Professor Dehne ranks among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in data science & AI.
Professor Dehne served as Director of the School of Computer Science and Founding Director of the Institute For Data Science.
