As immersive media become increasingly accessible, questions abound regarding their usefulness in design. How might Virtual Reality (VR) aid in 3D concept development? How might Mixed Reality (MR) better contextualize concepts for clients? How does the virtualization of visualization aid or hinder collaboration between designers? Where are the limits of designing in VR? What types of experiences might be better explored with VR?
This project challenged students to experiment with and navigate an emerging media toolchain in a collaborative VR space as they crafted a novel meal experience. Hardware included Meta Quest V2 mixed reality headsets, software included a closed beta version of Gravity Sketch Collab – a 3D sculpting app optimized for modeling products – which allowed virtual, remote collaboration between up to 4 students simultaneously. Students were challenged to push the limits of their tools as they were required to facilitate a live demonstration of their proposed meal experience.
