Desert landscape is one of my favourite environments for landscape photography. I love it just as much as seascape photography. Unlike popular opinion, the desert is full of life and stories. Of course, as any sub-genre of photography, it has its nuances and approaches to make it work.

The desert is a barren land with very little or no precipitation at all. The desert is not good for most plants and animals. And for humans too. These arid lands cover about 11% of the earth (or 20% including icy polar desert). The deserts are of the following types: mid-latitude, trade wind, coastal, rain shadow, monsoon or polar deserts.

The biggest attraction is all these various patterns that you find everywhere in the desert. Photographers often build desert images around these patterns. They work great for the foreground on wide-angle lenses. Also, they are sometimes quite good for stand-alone photos. These patterns include dry land cracks like you have seen in so many Death Valley photos.

Therefore, I prefer to start photographing a short time before sunrise and then all the way into the day. For the typical landscape, you have to align your schedule with the golden hour. This rule also applies to the desert; morning and evening light is the best. However, because the dunes are all over the place with their slopes having different angles, you can literally shoot all day and still see the textures. Just follow the Sun and the dune shapes.

My favourite period to shoot the desert landscape for many reasons (unlike seascapes, where I prefer the Blue Hour). The surface is not level and every dune or hump creates a shadow, and these shadows start moving as the Sun goes higher. Sometimes the pattern you find perfect lasts for mere seconds, so be quick.

Desert is beautiful and challenging. It requires some extra safety effort while preparing for the trip. The best thing about desert pictures it that such area is so full of stories and subjects to photograph. It works in every weather and can quickly stir up your creative juices.

Many people have already drowned in the desert. I know: sounds crazy. But for example in the Kaokoveld in Namibia or the Rub Al Khali on the Arabian Peninsula you can experience this: No rain. The sky is blue. Not a single cloud. Suddenly there comes a high flash flood. Because it has rained a lot 100km outside of the desert and the water is flowing through some valleys or old dry riverbeds in the desert. So always know you environment and be careful where to park your car and where to build your tent.

The next 12 hours were spent riding camels silently through the sand dunes, racing each other to the top of a dune to watch the sunset, having a fantastic dinner around a campfire before listening to some traditional Berber music, dragging our mattresses out of our tents to sleep under the stars, falling asleep while being able to see the Milky Way and dozens of shooting stars in the sky above, and waking up super early to watch the sun rise over the desert.

Your photos are fantastic. We recently did a 3 day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga which included an overnight in the desert. It was a life time wish of mine and I am so happy we did it. I can tell you loved the desert too by your photos.

As a nature photographer specializing in flower photography, many assume that all of my photography involves flowers. My fascination with capturing the world up-close extends well beyond the world of flowers. In fact, some of my favorite subjects are desert plants. Whether you are photographing in a desert room or arid greenhouse of a local conservatory or botanic garden, or in the desert areas of the southwestern United States and beyond, cacti and other succulents are subjects filled with interesting details, lines, texture and patterns.

Deserts are biologically rich habitats with a wide variety of plant life. Learning a bit about these plants and their adaptations to an environment of extremes is fascinating. The unusual shapes, shallow root systems, waxy coating, and thorns or spines are all ways the plants have adapted to the harsh conditions of the desert and enable them to store and conserve water. Ranges in temperature from searing heat during the day to a 40 degree drop at night, rocky, sandy soil and precious little water have all forced cacti and succulents to not only adapt but thrive in their unique environments.

If you want to work up close, it is important to have a macro lens with a focal length of 90mm, 100mm or 105mm. A zoom lens, such as a 24-105mm will allow you capture small scenes of desert plants. A 70-200mm or a longer focal length macro such as a 180mm will allow you to shoot subjects further away or keep your distance from cacti that have spines and thorns. If you enjoy using Lensbaby lenses to create beautiful blur and artistic effects, they are wonderful lenses for photographing desert plants.

Making Decisions About Aperture: As with any macro photography subject, I would encourage you to experiment with aperture. As you look at your subject, think about what you want to convey about that subject. You might choose a wider aperture and use selective focus to draw the eye to a specific part of the plant, letting the rest of the image fall into a beautiful blur. The smaller the aperture number (e.g. f/2.8), the less depth of field you will have. I find desert plants are wonderful subjects for exploring the use of selective focus. At other times, the detail of the plant leads me to want to capture all the detail in sharp focus, using a higher aperture number (e.g. f/16) to achieve a deeper depth of field. Experiment and try some new ways of capturing these fascinating plants.

Photographing desert plants is a fun way to explore the world of macro photography and to capture the personalities of these unique and beautiful subjects in the plant world. If you live near a conservatory or a botanic garden, chances are they will have a desert plant collection. If you are lucky enough to live in or visit the southwest, you will have ample opportunities to capture these amazing subjects.

There is something about the desert that my bohemian heart just loves! We had to time these photos out just perfectly in order to get that beautiful sunset glow that I love so much. I love the shadows created in these first couple photos! My beautiful sister was kind enough to be my photographer for these.

The dress just flowed effortlessly on Verina! The wind would pick up from time to time, so you had to be aware to cover your face and have something to do that with. She could not have picked a better outfit to finish the session. She was total desert drifting!
