A warm welcome to you as a new doctor working in University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Emergency Department.
We hope that you will take the opportunity to learn and educate yourselves as well as working hard and enjoying your time in Plymouth
During your stay with us your education and professional development is one of our priorities.
To this end we have arranged an induction program which will inform you about the way we work in the ED, and how to manage some of the common emergencies.
Before arriving in the ED, please complete and submit the following forms:
Day 1 is compulsory for all new doctors starting in the Emergency Department and will be on your rota. You will receive an email with information of where and what time to report.
On day 2 there is a bespoke foundation doctor (FY1 & FY2) induction. The afternoon of the second day is reserved for self-study and e-learning for the F1 and F2s.
Please note that some of you will not need to attend the Hospital Trust induction. Please confirm this with Workforce Development if you are unsure.
Please dress appropriately as you will be visiting clinical areas. This includes short sleeves and bare below the elbows. Refer to the trust dress code for clinical areas or ask if unsure.
You will receive a named consultant at the start of your placement as your clinical supervisor who will be responsible for overseeing your clinical work and providing constructive feedback during your training placement. You should make contact within the first 2 weeks for your initial meeting, and we expect you to meet a total of 2-3 times during your placement.
We recognise that working in the Emergency Department for the first time can be daunting, and unlike other hospital environments in which you have previously been exposed. As a result, we have a specific educational and induction programme aimed towards your needs. As adult learners we expect you to take your educational needs seriously and invest time in meeting those needs proactively. You can access more information regarding the education program here.
You can contact the Education Faculty for more information.

Welcome to the Emergency Department. If you are starting at 08h00 or 22h00 please report to the Stewart Room for handover. If you are starting at times outside of this, please report to the EPIC (ED Physician in Charge) who will be seated on the majors desk opposite Majors 17.
Please note we expect all of our clinicians to be ready to start work and in attendance to the handover room or shopfloor at/before your shift start time.
You should have been given logons for Nervecentre (ED electronic patient record), iCM (blood and imaging requesting) and WebPacs (radiology viewer) and should be completed your training prior to your shift. You are entitled to three pairs of scrubs, which you can collect in the admin office in the ED. Prior to induction you should have had information on ordering your scrubs and your requested size will be available. Should these not fit, we will ensure you have alternatives.
There is only one gold standard of care when putting your name to something in a healthcare environment (notes, ECG, anything), and that is that we PRINT or stamp our name plus GMC number. Stamps are available to buy here.
Best wishes
