Building for the future - ABOUT OUR UNDERAGE CLUB

St. Joseph's GAA Club ran a schools coaching programme in conjunction with Warwickshire GAA in schools in Derby City, Etwall and Burton. We will be running the next phase of this programme from February 2022 in other schools in Derby City. Through our club and school links it is estimated that over 400 children will have access to Gaelic football in Derby by the end of December 2022. This is a massive achievement for our club.

In the coming months we hope to field teams to compete in a newly formed East Midlands Blitz competition alongside St. Barnabas of Nottingham, Naomh Padraig of Leicester & Sons of Erin of Northampton.

In the winter of 2020 a number of players and club members have been working through the qualifications required to undertake coaching to boys and girls under the age of 18.

Upon completion of these courses all of our coaches will:

  • Hold a clear DBS clearance (Disclosure and Baring Service)

  • Hold a Foundation Course in Gaelic football coaching

  • Have completed a three hour Safeguarding and Child Protection qualification

All of these qualifications have been completed with the Warwickshire GAA with the backing of UK Coaching

We have also been working with the Community Development Administrator (CDA) Dermot Thornton to deliver coaching in St. Joseph's School, Derby, St. Mary's, Derby, Etwall Primary School and St. Moderns School Burton. In the coming academic year we are hoping to run sessions in other schools in our feeder towns, cities and suburbs along with a primary school and secondary school events, open days and participation in Super Centre fixtures at local Gaelic football teams.
