The Department of Psychology of KET's V.G.Vaze College was established in the Academic Year 1990-91, that is, 33 years ago. The faculty members who supported and served in the department in the initial years were Mrs. Neeta Kulkarni (Head), Mrs. Geeta Kale, and Ms. Neeta Sawant (Mehta).

The department offers Psychology at the Junior College level as well as Undergraduate Level. The Department has planned its curriculum to help students strengthen their knowledge in the fields of psychology. Along with establishing a theoretical basis in the First Year and Second Year of Under graduation, the college also provides practical experiences in the Third Year. It also offers an applied component in the Second Year. Activities of the Department have indicated a tremendous progress over the last 33 years.

The faculty teachers, with their dedication, sincerity, sense of commitment, hard work, and discipline, along with the students, have created a strong foundation for the department. The department has always attracted highly talented, sincere, motivated, and hard-working students. Many of our alumni are today at the peak of success in various fields of Psychology.

LABORATORY 

FACILITIES 

The Department of Psychology has a fully equipped experimental psychology laboratory. The laboratory is furnished with instrument, practical materials, computer and 12 tables for conducting experiments. In order to acquaint students with wide variety of research tools, experiments are conducted manually as well as on  computer. The lab holds multiple Psychological tests  namely - Standard Progressive Test, Rotter Locus of Control,  Eysenck Personality Test. The facility is large enough to allow as many as 26 students to conduct experiments. The Department has a small library of its own consisting of 175 books.

ACTIVITIES 2023-24 


1)Rising from the ashes: This event under the segment rising from the ashes was called 'victim to victor'.On Thursday, 13th July 2023, the psychology department held an interview session with Kalpana vandana about her inspiring journey from a domestic violence survivor to a successful entrepreneur. The event started at 10:30 am and ended by 12:30 pm with an audience of 83 students. 

2) Farewell to Batch 2022-2023:The students of TYBA Psychology of the batch 2023-2024 organized a fun farewell for the batch of 2022-2023 on 24th July 2023 in Mini Auditorium.

3) Rising from the ashes : This event under the segment of rising from the ashes was about the inspiring stories of people whom we know as teachers from our own college.  On Thursday 31st August 2023, the Psychology Department held an interview session with Mrs. Deepali Chawan and Mrs.Vaishali Patil. The interview was conducted by Dr. Neeta Mehta (HOD, Department of Psychology).The event started at 10:30 am and ended by 12:30 pm.

4) Suicide Prevention Day: On 10th September,2023, the Department of Psychology of in Collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Thane East, organised a Suicide Prevention Day Awareness Campaign at Talao Pali, Thane (west) at 8:00am. On 15th September 2023 the same event was performed in college along with exhibition of paintings made by the artist who died because of suicide or any Psychological illness. The exhibition was held in the Psychology lab in collaboration with the Department of English Literature.

5) Mastering Data Insights: Exploring Quantitative Analysis with SPSS and JASP: The Department of Psychology organized a session on SPSS and JASP on 11th September 2023 in Psychology Lab at 10:30am. The guest speaker for the session was Ms. Stuti Mehta, a junior research fellowship scholar who briefed students on how to use these softwares for research purposes. 

6) Cognitive Day: The students of TYBA psychology of the batch 2023-2024 organized an exhibition on 13th September 2023 on the occasion of the cognitive day, the venue was Psychology lab and commerce lab . Many activities exploring principles of cognitive psychology were introduced to the visitors. 

7) Introduction to Indian Psychology: The Department of Psychology conducted a guest lecture on "Introduction to Indian Psychology" on 13th September 2023. The venue for the session was google meet. The guest speaker for the session was Mr. Asira Chirmuley who is an Associate fellow and supervisor at REBT USA and a Director of Atha center for psychotherapy, Thane. She briefed students about understanding psychological phenomena through an Indian perspective.

8) Breaking Barriers : Psychology Exhibition : On 16th September the students of SYBA Psychology of the batch of 2023-24 organized an eye-opening exhibition on the topic 'Prejudice Stereotyping and Discrimination' in the Psychology Lab. This exhibition was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Neeta Mehta (HOD, Department of Psychology) and was inaugurated by our principal Prof. (Dr.) Preeta Nilesh. The exhibition was attended by 150 students from FYBA, SYBA and TYBA. The students covered Indian communities, western countries, East asian countries and the LGBTQ+ community.

8) Mental Health Day: The event "Mental Health Day" was conducted on 10th October,2023 in the psychology lab . This event was collectively planned by FYBA psychology students as a part of co curricular activity which shaded focus on Mental Health. With the help of charts and models students introduced concept of mental health to all the visitors and also explained the ways of maintaining good mental health. 'Anapansathi' ,a the meditation session of 15 mins conducted by prof .Reeta kamble mam . Over-all it included presentation about mental health and stigmas related to it along with the meditation session.

9) FilmyPsche : Shattered in Diversity: On the 26th-27th of September the event “FilmyPsche” was hosted by students of SYBA Psychology of the batch 2023-24 in the Radhabai Vaze Auditorium with an objective to create awareness about prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination that takes place in the society by the means of cinema which enriched film literacy in students from a different perspective. This two-day event consisted of three sessions based on- Caste, Gender and Disability prevalent in our country. 

11. Rising from the ashes: This event under the segment of rising from the ashes was held in the Radhabai Vaze Auditorium from 10:30 to 12:30 on 4th November 2023. It about the struggle and endurance of a resilient mother, Mrs. Kaushal Shah in regards to her daughter who has down syndrome. On Saturday, 4th November 2023, the SYBA students of Psychology held an interview session with Mrs. Kaushal shah who spoke about her struggles which has turned into her having this beautiful relationship with her daughter, Hetanshi. 

12) Industrial Visits: The Department of Psychology scheduled the first industrial visit for the TYBA Psychology batch of 2023-24 on 5th December, 2023. Saptasopan Rehabilitation Center (IPH), Thane, Maharashtra, was the destination. The visit was attended by 29 students out of 32. The visit focused on the work of the Institution of Psychological Health (IPH), Thane, an NGO, and Saptasopan Rehabilitation Center, as well as Tridal Rehab Group, both of which are initiatives of IPH. 

13. Alumni Meet: The event “Alumni Meet '' was held on 21st December, 2023 at 09:30 am in the Smt. Radhabai Vaze Auditorium. The Guest speakers for the event were Dr. Ketki Gadre, Ms. Panna Kamaljit, Ms. Vishakha Sodhani, Ms. Tanushree Utekar, Ms. Kaarunya Trilok  and Ms. Sailee Shinde. The event was organized by the Department of Psychology to provide students with insights into the experiences of a psychologist in various fields. The event included introduction and felicitation of the guest speakers followed by sharing of experiences of the alumni and a question answer round.

14. Rising from the ashes:Embarking on a journey of resilience and triumph, this report delves into the inspiring narrative of an individual's victorious battle against alcoholism. On Thursday 4th January 2024, in the Radhabai Vaze Auditorium the SYBA students of the psychology department conducted an interview session with Omkar Vishwanath Sawant, who is a recovering alcoholic.

15. Film Festival : Workplace Aggression in Lights, Camera and Action: The event ‘Workplace Aggression in Lights, Camera and Action!’ was hosted by students of SYBA Psychology of the batch 2023-24 on 6th January at 10:30 am in the Radhabai vaze Auditorium. The event aimed to raise awareness about the psychological aspects of workplace aggression. The film festival showcased a curated selection of films exploring different facets of workplace aggression, engaging the audience in thought-provoking discussions.

16) Film Festival - Dissociative Identity Disorder: The Department of Psychology organized the film festival on " Dissociative Identity Disorder" on 8th and 9th January, 2024 at 10:30 am in the Radhabai Vaze Auditorium. There was a total turnover of 47 students on the 1st day and 70 students on the 2nd day in attendance for the event. The event was collectively planned by the psychology students of TYBA, as a part of their Abnormal Psychology assignment under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta. The Guest Speaker Dr. Geeta Joshi (clinical psychologist) provided students with enlightening and insightful information about the disorder. 

17. Visual Tour : Groundbreaking Experiments in Psychology : The  SYBA students of psychology on 12th January 2024 orchestrated a captivating visual journey, unravelling the mysteries of groundbreaking experiments by eminent psychologists, the venue of this Tour was the Self- Financed Library. From meticulously crafted models to compelling posters and enlightening videos, they transformed the space into an immersive learning hub. The open-door event invited curious minds to freely explore and absorb the intricacies of each experiment.

18)  Industrial Visits to Indore: The Department of Psychology organized the industrial visit for the TYBA Psychology batch of 2023-24 from 27th January 2023 to 1st February 2024, to Indore. The visit was attended by a total of 13 SYBA and 27 TYBA students and 2 Professors. The visit largely focused on introducing the students to the clinical workings  and practical applications in the field of Psychology by visiting five mental health institutes and a spiritual center for mental wellbeing.

19) Sushrusha: Celebrating Caregivers Journey: The event “Sushrusha: Celebrating Caregivers’ Journey '' was conducted on 5th February, 2024 at 10:00 am in the Smt. Radhabai Vaze Auditorium. The Guest speakers for the event were Mrs. Priyanka Padave, Mr. Padmakar Padave and Ms. Sangita Joshi. The event was collectively planned by the psychology students of TYBA, as a part of their Abnormal Psychology assignment under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta. The event included introduction and felicitation of the three caregivers followed by an interview.

20) Workshop on “Qualitative Research: Coding and Analysis” : The Department of Psychology organized a highly informative workshop on "Qualitative Research: Coding and Analysis" on 6th February 2024 in the Psychology Lab. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Meet Shinde, faculty member, P.N Doshi College. The primary objective of the workshop was to help third-year psychology students better grasp the process of qualitative research. The resource person left no stone unturned in delivering an exceptional session. 

21) Work life balance event: The event “Work Life Balance 101 (Workshop for working students)” was conducted on 15thMarch, 2024 at 10:30 am in the Psychology Lab. There was a total attendance of 31 students for the event. The event was collectively planned by the psychology students of TYBA, as a part of their Industrial and Organizational Psychology assignment under the guidance of Assistant Professor Reeta Kamble ma’am. The workshop commenced with an illuminating opening session, emphasizing the critical need for equilibrium in the lives of working students. Throughout the event, participants engaged in a series of purposeful activities designed to enhance their time management skills, alleviate stress, and develop practical strategies for achieving a harmonious work-life balance. The core focus of the workshop was to equip participants with tangible tools and insights to navigate the demands of both their professional and academic lives effectively.


22) ‘When Coping Fails’ - Exhibition on Depression and Bipolar Disorder: The Department of Psychology organized a series of exhibitions titled "When Coping Fails" which commenced on February 16th in the Psychology lab, from 9 am to 3 pm. Inaugurated by Dr. Deepali Kulkarni, the event marked the beginning of a three-day exhibition organized by the TYBA psychology students under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta. The exhibition focused on Bipolar disorder and Depression, covering clinical presentations, causal factors, neurobiological aspects, and treatment approaches. 

23) ‘When Coping Fails’ - Exhibition on Schizophrenia.: The second exhibition in the series of exhibitions titled “When Coping Fails” focused on Schizophrenia. It was inaugurated by Dr. Adhir Ambavane and organized by the TYBA psychology students under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta. With a total attendance of 137 individuals, including students and outsiders and 17 college professors, the exhibition aimed to increase understanding of schizophrenia through information presented through cardboard visuals, case studies, audiovisual activities etc.

24) ‘When Coping Fails’ - Exhibition on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.: The third exhibition in the series of exhibitions titled “When Coping Fails” focused on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. It was Inaugurated by the Principal Prof.Dr.Preeta Nilesh and organized by the TYBA psychology students under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta. With a total attendance of 114 individuals and 21 college professors, the exhibition focused on covering topics like Alcohol, how it turns into addiction,  a 12 step program of alcohol anonymous and treatment approaches for the same.

25) “DIVERGENT DESIRES”- An Exhibition on Paraphilic Disorder and Gender Dysphoria. The "Divergent Desires" exhibition was on February 28th in the Psychology lab, from 9 am to 3 pm. This exhibition focused on gender dysphoria and paraphilic disorder. It was inaugurated by Ms. Shilpa Suryavanshi (HOD Political Science) and organized by TYBA Psychology students under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta. The total attendance was 110 students and 6 teachers. The exhibition aimed at spreading awareness about gender dysphoria and paraphilic disorder, the information was presented using charts, cardboard displays, videos, case studies etc.

26) Quiz competition- The "Mental Maze- Quiz Competition for Mental Health Awareness”  held on March 1, 2024, emerged as a compelling initiative to spread awareness on mental health and combat the stigma surrounding it. It was organized in the Main Auditorium at 10:30 am. The event, featuring 10 enthusiastic teams in the qualifier, showcased a unique format with four intense rounds, each escalating in difficulty to challenge participants on their mental health knowledge. The overarching goal was to foster a deeper understanding of mental health issues while engaging the audience in an informative and interactive session. The event's structure proved both engaging and competitive. The qualifier round saw 10 teams vying for a spot in the subsequent rounds, and only four teams advanced based on their performance. The questions posed in each round covered a broad spectrum of mental health topics, ranging from basic concepts to more intricate details, creating a Mental Maze that challenged participants intellectually. The dynamic nature of the quiz kept the audience and participants thoroughly engaged, fostering a sense of healthy competition and camaraderie among teams. In conclusion, the "Mental Maze" Quiz Competition on Mental Health Awareness was a resounding success, offering a unique and effective approach to disseminating crucial information. The event not only contributed to increasing awareness but also created a positive and engaging atmosphere that encouraged open conversations about mental health, ultimately fostering a more informed and supportive community.

 27) Rising from ashes - This event, titled 'Rising from the ashes,' was conducted by the SYBA students of Psychology on 2nd March 2024, bringing forth yet another inspiring narrative.
From her early years enduring ridicule due to her condition of Achondroplasia, Mrs. Disha Pandya's journey exemplifies resilience. Despite facing mockery, she persisted, ultimately winning gold in a para championship. With her father's unwavering support, she graduated college and found a passion for graphic designing. Today, as the creative head at Rich Products, she stands as a beacon of success.
In her personal life, Mrs. Pandya faced hurdles in marriage and pregnancy. However, she defied skepticism by giving birth to India's first dwarf twins, a testament to her strength and determination. Alongside her professional achievements, she founded the "Little People of India" organization, aiming to improve the lives of individuals with dwarfism.
Through her inspiring narrative, Mrs. Pandya emphasizes the importance of societal acceptance and inclusion. Her story serves as a reminder that with determination and support, one can overcome adversity and pave the way for a more inclusive future.

28) “Breaking the Silence” - Counseling Needs Across the Gender Spectrum: The Women Development Cell and Department of Psychology organized a student seminar on counseling needs of women, men and sexual minorities on 6th March 2024 at 10:00am in the mini auditorium. The students of TYBA psychology presented their research highlighting the challenges faced by these groups and their inferred counseling needs. 

29) Cognitive Exhibition : The Cognitive Psychology Exhibition held on March 7, 2024, unfolded as a dynamic and intellectually stimulating experience with a unique treasure hunt twist. Eight enthusiastic teams actively participated, immersing themselves in a captivating journey through the fascinating realm of cognitive psychology. This treasure hunt was organized as a part of our Cognitive psychology assignments under the guidance of Assistant Professor Reeta Kamble ma’am. Each team embarked on a quest, solving intricately designed clues that guided them from one exhibit to another, where the focus was on exploring the neural bases of various cognitive processes. The treasure hunt format not only injected an element of excitement but also served as an ingenious strategy to present complex topics in an accessible manner. Teams engaged in decoding clues and piecing together information at each exhibit, deepening their understanding of cognitive processes while fostering teamwork and critical thinking skills. The exhibition covered a diverse range of topics, from memory and attention to language processing, offering a comprehensive overview of the intricacies of cognitive psychology

30. Violation of Employee Benefits in India: The event “Violation of Employee Benefits in India '' was held on 7th March, 2024 at 08:00 am in the Psychology Lab (Room no. 07). The Guest speaker for the event was Adv. Smita Gajul The event was collectively planned by the psychology students of TYBA, as a part of their Industrial-Organizational Psychology assignment under the guidance of Dr. Neeta Mehta and Ms. Reeta Kamble ma'am.  The event included introduction and felicitation of the guest speaker followed by a session on the complexities surrounding employee benefits violations within the Indian context.
