Sociology is the youngest branch of social sciences. Its major concern is society; hence, it is popularly known as the "Science of Society". It studies the nature and character of human society and its origin, development, structure and functions. At the personal level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of such things as racial and gender identity, family conflict, deviant behaviour, ageing and religious faith. At the societal level sociology examines and explains matters like crime and law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, business forms, urban community and social movements. At the global level sociology studies such phenomena as population growth and migration, war, peace and economic development. Sociology yield powerful insights into the social process shaping human lives and social problems and prospects in the contemporary world. MESSAGE FROM HOD
Welcome to the Department of Sociology
My persistent and consistent efforts as Head of the Department is to provide best Platform to the students to develop Intellectually, Socially and Professionally. We equip our students in such a way that they become best human resource for the overall development of the society. Our department is readily available to the students for any consultation regarding curricular, co-curricular activities. Consequently, our students participate in various activities which take place at inter-college and intra-college level. Our department in normal routine conducts counselling sessions at the entry-level i.e. BG- Ist year to motivate students towards sociology by acquainting them with the diversity and the scope of the subject it offers and as such our enrolment has increased rapidly over the last few years. Further in order to develop interdisciplinary approach our department collaborates with the departments of Social Work, Education, Psychology and Political Science to increase the skill set of students. Our department conducts periodical test to evaluate the students and redress their weakness. We arrange remedial classes for the weak students and as such our result performance has shown a significant improvement during the previous years. The students are involved in micro-level surveys to get acquainted about Kashmiri society.
