Call for Papers

The 17th International Conference on Deontic Logic and Normative Systems (DEON 2025) will be held July 1 - July 03, 2025. The conference will be preceded by a day of tutorials on June 30.

About the DEON conference series

The biennial International Conference on Deontic Logic and Normative Systems (DEON) conference series aims at bringing together researchers interested in the formal study of normative concepts, normative reasoning, and normative systems using methods from computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, and law. The series particularly aims at fostering interdisciplinary collaboration that combines methods from these various fields. Topics include but are not limited to the investigation of normative reasoning, concepts, and systems in relation to:

agency and action  natural language

argumentation norm change/revision

defeasible reasoning philosophy of reasons

deontic modals policy

epistemic reasoning preference reasoning

explainability responsibility

knowledge representation social values

legal reasoning temporal reasoning

multi-agent systems trustworthy systems

We welcome submissions of both theoretical and applied research for DEON 2025, and encourage interdisciplinary work.

Special focus

In addition to the general themes of the DEON conference series, DEON 2025 encourages the submission of papers on the special theme of Normative AI. The central aim of Normative AI is to ensure that AI systems make morally, legally, and socially acceptable decisions. As AI becomes increasingly important to human society, it is crucial to ensure that these technologies have a positive and responsible impact. This highly interdisciplinary field involves the evaluation and development of theories, formal frameworks, and algorithms, integrating both symbolic and sub-symbolic AI methods.

DEON2025 policy on the use of LLMs.

DEON2025 adopts the AAAI policy on plagiarism and the use of LLMs to produce content of submitted papers: Papers containing text generated by LLMs are not allowed. Exception is made when the text occurs as part of an experimental analysis, provided explicit citation of its source LLM is given. Authors are allowed to use LLMs for editing and language polishing purposes with respect to author-written text.

We follow AAAI policy and consider generative AI models to not satisfy criteria for authorship of scientific papers and therefore such papers may also not be used as a citable source in a DEON submission.

In submitting to DEON, authors are fully responsible for their submitted content, which includes avoiding plagiarism and the abovementioned use of LLMs. Any allegation or violation of the above policy will be investigated and, if substantiated, possible outcomes include rejection/retraction of the work.

The reviewing process is single-blind (non-anonymized). Papers should be written in English. Submitted papers should not be longer than 15 pages, excluding references and technical appendix. Reviewers are not required to read the technical appendix and may choose to do so at their discretion.  LaTex and Word templates are available for preparing submissions (LaTex Download; Word Download). The authors should upload their PDF files for review through the EasyChair system. Upon acceptance, final papers must be submitted as a LaTeX file with corresponding PDF for the camera-ready version. The conversion of a word file to the appropriate LaTeX template is the sole responsibility of the authors of the accepted paper.

Paper submission in PDF format will be managed through EasyChair online at
