Tryout Requirements
Tryouts will include a variety of cheerleading skills that will be demonstrated during the tryout process. In addition:
Candidates must submit the following documents: Completed NHS Cheerleading Tryout Form, 3+ Faculty Recommendation Forms, final grade print out of Fall Semester, and a current Sports Physical completed by the candidates physician. Faculty Recommendations will be weighted heavily in final tryout score. ALL TRYOUT FORMS CAN BE FOUND UNDER TRYOUT INFORMATION -> REQUIRED FORMS.
Candidates and their parent/guardian must read and understand the NHS Cheerleading Contract.
Candidates must arrive promptly and in proper attire to ALL tryout clinics.
Candidates must be in good physical condition/health in order to participate.
Candidates will tryout in groups and will be assigned a random number to determine the tryout order.
Tryouts will occur in front of the NHS Cheer coaches and judges. They are the only people permitted in the try out areas. No other spectators will be admitted.
All cheerleaders will be expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times; this includes good sportsmanship at our introductory gathering, clinic, and tryouts.
Candidates are asked to wear plain black shorts and a plain white shirt (no graphics allowed). Candidates are asked to wear hair up in a pony-tail with all wisps, bangs, and tendrils pulled back and securely out of his/her face. In addition, athletic shoes with no-show socks must be worn. No jewelry allowed.
Candidates will be given a number and expected to wear that each day. Failure to bring it the following day will result in a loss of points.
Clinic and Judging
Judges with a cheerleading background will determine the scores of each candidate during the tryout. Judges will be given a score sheet to fill out that reflects the criterion taught during tryout clinics.
Candidates will learn the following for tryouts during clinics: one sideline cheer, one chant, one dance with music, jumps and kicks
Candidates will be judged on the following:
Short dance
One of the two sideline cheers
Chant
Toe touch, double-whip, and a jump of their choice
Tumbling
Stunting
Technique
Coachability
Attitude
Past performance in the Viking Cheer Program will be considered, but does not guarantee your position for the upcoming season. If a cheerleader has not met the requirements in the previous year, they may not be asked to return for the upcoming season.
ALL TRYOUT MATERIAL MUST BE SUBMITTED PRIOR TO TRYOUTS TO BE CONSIDERED.
