Justice in the terms of distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.
Currently, social justice movements have emphasized breaking the barriers for social mobility, economic stability, and creating safety nets. In other words, there should be fair relations between individuals and a society
Who can help address homelessness?
Who can help address homelessness?
- Government
- How are the City of Denver and the state of Colorado addressing homelessness?
- In 2005, a ten-year plan was developed by the Denver Commission on Homelessness to achieve the lofty goal of completely eliminating homelessness by 2015.
- In 2014, the city of Denver released a five-year affordable housing plan called Housing Denver to "bolster affordability for all income levels from homeless to low-, moderate- and median-income households."

- Non-profit organizations
- Non-profit organizations provide services, goods, and resources that provide economic stability and relief for vulnerable populations. Several non-profit organizations in the Denver area provide support and resources for homeless individuals.

- You! During our time at the Denver Rescue Mission, volunteers were vital in order for the organization to run as smoothly as possible. Volunteering within your community is a small but very important aspect in making a change for the better. Volunteering gives you insights, new experiences, and the opportunity to give back and help others.

What does Social Justice look like at the Denver Rescue Mission?
Social Justice at the Denver Rescue Mission focuses on providing individuals with the opportunities to succeed through two programs that help people learn skills such as money managment, resume building, and other basic life skills that will help them in everyday life.
The mission also focuses on drug rehabilitaion for those who choose to be part of the programs. They employ a three strike poliocy becasue no one is perfect.

Community Assets within Denver
Community asset are all things that help improve the lives of the community.
Examples we saw throughout our service:
- People that gained a position of power and instigated a positive change:
- Moe began working in the Denver Rescue Mission's kitchen while going through a program to combat his own experience with homelessness. He puts his all into giving people a nice hot meal, and emphasized the human factor.
- Physical structures
- General assets: Community schools, churches, libraries, shelters, and parks.
- During our visit at the Denver Rescue Mission Chapel we learned that the triangle park outside was transformed into a clean park away from the notorious drug dealing.
- The new park now includes:
- No wall
- integrated triangular space
- lighting
- interactive trees

Community assets don't end here. They can also be implemented through active citizens, local businesses, and a plethora of public gathering spaces. Positive community assets can help create effective solutions that improve the lives of those within the community.
