If your child's tooth is lost early, Prosthetic crowns are given for the anterior tooth and Space Maintainers are advised for the posterior tooth,If the conservation of that space is not properly managed and the gap starts to close, the probability for the adjacent teeth to invade it and consequently prevent the eruption of the permanent tooth underneath it, becomes highly probable and risky.For this reason,the use of a space Maintainers is usually recommended.

Expanding the dental arch provides a more comprehensive correction for crowding because it gains space across arch. Making the arches wider/bigger can be done either with a retainer or a fixed expander or even with a partial braces.
