Where is Kazimierz?
Kazimierz is the historic Jewish quarter of Kraków, Poland, named after King Casimir the Great, who founded it in the 14th century. It served as a thriving center of Jewish life for centuries. In the map above, it is the island to the left. During the time of my novels, Kazimierz was the capital of Poland. The capital later moved to Warsaw in 1596 and the country became known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The northern and eastern tributary of the Vistula that was the border of Kazimierz was filled in, at the end of the 1800's. The former riverbed was transformed into what is now Josef Dietla Street.
