Due to the high volume cases and the widespread nature of transmission vector control strategies since January 1 have been limited to community mobilization and source reduction.
Insecticide resistance tests recently conducted indicate a high level of resistance to deltamethrin for both major vector species (Ae. aegypit and Ae. albopictus). Further tests on susceptibility of local Ae. aegypti populations to permethrin will be undertaken this month.
Larval surveys of dengue vectors in the provinces indicate that provincial capitals in Malampa and Tafea Provinces currently have high levels of Aedes aegypti present. There were no Ae. aegypti located in the Provincial capital of Penama and low levels of Ae. aegypti in the Sanma capital (Luganville).
Tyres, pot plant trays and drums are identified as the major dengue mosquito breeding source in Port Vila. Residents should ensure that if these types of containers are in their yard then they should be emptied/destroyed/placed under cover.
