IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GOFUNDME:
Many people have turned to GoFundMe to raise funds for immediate assistance after these devastating fires. It is important to note that FEMA, by law, cannot duplicate benefits you receive from another source. For example, if you receive donations to clean up storm damage to your home, FEMA may not be able to also grant you financial assistance for home clean up.
Regardless, you should apply for FEMA aid.
On your GoFundMe page, keep it vague. "Don't specify what you need the funds for. When you apply to FEMA for help with specific things, the agency won't be able to point to your GoFundMe page to deny your assistance. Your GoFundMe page can be as simple as you are a wildfire survivor and need help." (abc7)
Tips for making a good GoFundMe page:
Identify yourself. Give at least one first and last name as well as how many people are in your family and any additional details- how many kids, how many elderly, etc. You want potential donors to trust that you are a real person. GoFundMe fraud is rampant, and it is hard to identify a fraudulent page.
Add photos! A family photo, a picture of the home you lost (if possible, add photos from before and after the fire)
Be vague in the purpose of your funds. This is so FEMA cannot deny you assistance (read above). For example:
These funds are to help us get back on our feet after the wildfire.
These funds are for miscellaneous expenses due to the wildfire.
