Deities of Demortuan

The truth is, the War of the Gods was the reason for the Great Freeze of Demortuan. Urgathoa struck down and restrained Charon, the Horseman of the Apocalypse, opening a gateway to Abadon. Daemons ran riot on the material plane alongside the already existing undead populous that Charon had summoned through an ancient ritual, plaguing the land with a curse to raise the deceased.

The material plane was sent into chaos, with the habitants waging war against the increasing Daemon population. The Clerics of Nine performed the Ritual of Ancients ending all curses, but in the process they channeled divinity from the Gods with no control. The Gods, upon realisation they had been used by the mortals, brought amongst themselves a war. One side vowed to protect the mortals, the other to kill them and start over.

Pharasma, being the only one who could see this war tearing apart what the Great Old Ones had created, called upon Groetus and together they caused a freeze in the multiverse with a meteorite being released from the Atlas Belt. It ceased all mortal activity and the Gods could only watch as their creations froze. Worship brought the Gods their powers and now without anyone to carry out the worship their powers were to drain to nothingness. Pharasma demanded that no God should part-take in the interactions with the mortals, if her demands were met she would release the hold her and Groetus had created. An agreement was made and so the Gods left the mortals to balance their own world, only allowing them to syphon off small amounts of power for the Clerics and Divine believers.

The Great Freeze that hit the multiverse broke most of the modern technology into nothing but parts. Demortuan was hit by a global magical iceage, infusing living creatures with faith to the Gods but the free-will to learn for themselves. A large amount of the populous of Demortuan died, during the defrost, however those that remained were given the fruits of Demortuan and everything it had to offer. All renewed. Nobody, however, remembered life before the Great Freeze and only the basic of buildings remained.

Some people, from over 700 years ago, still remain alive to this day. Believed to be infused with magic, irradiated, cursed or souls trapped in the material plane, they're known as The Old Ones. Many fear these people, but nobody has ever met them. Some believe they are the leaders of the Wandering Races, others say they're just folklore to scare the children into sleeping.

This lack of god interaction heightened science and lead to experimentation. Especially those without the ability to use the Arcane or Divine magic channels. Now, although many years behind where it should be, the main populous of Demortuan has enough knowledge of technology to create steampower and golems. Little is known about this creation of magically infused life, few people are able to attain such a feat. It is believed that this power stirs the Gods, but without their direct intervention nobody knows how they feel.
