February 2, 2025
Feb. 13, 7pm, Crystal Ballroom, CH 1: We have a fascinating program. Our guest speaker’s topic is “Politics and the Challenge of Uncertainty.” The commentator will be Sunil Dasgupta, Political Science professor at UMBC and host of Montgomery County’s “I Hate Politics” podcast.
The issues are many, such as what to expect from a new President, who embraces fascism and seeks revenge on states such as Maryland? How will he employ ICE against our neighbors who are refugees? Or deny rights to gay and transgender citizens? Attack minorities?
On a more local level, what about the uncertainty of 2026 year’s local elections, with term limits opening up many new positions? Will the Council be able to close the budget gap without raising taxes? A preview can be found on his most recent podcast where his guests explained the effects of Gov. Moore’s recent budget proposals, both taxes and cuts.
Dasgupta is a journalist and professor who is knowledgeable about his home base of Montgomery County, including how we vote, what influences the County Council to vote the way it does, and what is in our future from the County Council. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
Also at this meeting we will discuss and vote on changes to our bylaws. Details were in last week’s Donkey Dispatch and will be available at the meeting. Only dues paying members can vote.
On March 13 author, lecturer and musician Daryl Davis will speak. He will discuss his very popular and controversial book Klan-destine Relationships: A Black Man's Odyssey in the Ku Klux Klan. “The author, who is a professional musician, recounts his courageous, lifelong confrontations and conversations with members of the Ku Klux Klan in an attempt to unearth the roots of bigotry and foster harmony between black and white, often using music to bridge the divide.” Davis, who is Black, went into the Klan’s den in his effort to foster communications. Note: Due to his popularity the event will be ticketed. Details TBA.
Demonstrate with the Growing Resistance: “The resistance isn’t dead, just different.”
Join CASA and numerous other partners for Marylanders Rally for Immigrant Justice this coming Tuesday, February 4, at Lawyer's Mall (in front of the Statehouse) in Annapolis. · Protecting Sensitive Locations Act -- establishes clear guidelines restricting ICE access to sensitive locations, including schools, courthouses, hospitals, places of worship, and other vital spaces.
· Maryland Data Privacy Act -- blocks ICE from obtaining warrantless access to state and local agency databases.
· Ending 287(g) Agreements -- those agreements allow local police to act as ICE agents.
Demonstrate Part 2: Show your support for our professional Civil Service by joining an American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Rally to Save the Civil Service on Tuesday, Feb. 11 from noon-1pm at the Upper Senate Park on Capitol Hill in DC.
