For The Callisto Protocol, we used emotional colors to drive the palette. The idea was developed by the Lighting Director ( Atsushi Seo ) and myself. The colors drove the palette and were reflected in the concept art included in the Art Plans.
Both Atsushi and I liked the idea of bringing structure and intent to the game's palette. Atsushi went and gathered colors and the emotions tied to them. Then I worked with Narrative to come up with a broad-stroke initial color scheme.
I established and then drove a regular sync with Narrative, Concept, Lighting, and Design to map out the beats and moment-to-moment mood of each level.
I gathered a consensus with the group and worked together with Atsushi to map emotional colors to areas. These notes were included as part of the Level Art Plans which were distributed to the team.
I gathered all the available mood pieces ( or screengrabs if mood concept was not available ), and either I or Concept would grade them to match the desired colors. Thus, I derived the color script for the game.
