The Art Bible defined how to build the world, the style guides provided a reference for each discipline, and the Art Plans applied our style guides to the levels. Building a game like the Callisto Protocol requires consistently and continually communicating with the team. To direct the team I used the following process.
Art Pillars
Setting clearly defined goals for the Art team to follow was my first step. These goals ( pillars ) were simple and communicated to each team member on their orientation.
Research
The next step in establishing the direction was researching the subject matter. Since one of my art pillars was relatability, this was an important step. I and members of the concept team established shared mood boards to gather all this information.
Concept
Once I and the concept team had done work establishing mood boards, we started concepting everything. In all, we have 6000 pieces of unique concept.
The Art Bible
With Concept being ongoing, I started to create the Art Bible. In it I defined the rules for creating our world with concept and research examples. This was documented online and shared with the level pods as they were buidling the game.
Style Guides
Where I thought we needed more clarity ( or asked by a team member ) I would provide more detailed direction in the form of style guides. Some were discipline-specific, and others could be related to a game feature. Here are some samples.
Level Art Plans
The last step was to take all the information in the Art bible and style guides and apply them to each level. This was done in the form of Level Art Plans that were discussed with the level pods when building the game.
