Japanese society has achieved one of the world’s most advanced models of healthy longevity through universal health insurance and the long-term care insurance system. As a result, the number of people living with dementia has increased dramatically. In 2024, Japan enacted the Dementia Basic Act, establishing the construction of a dementia-inclusive society as a national goal. Rather than excluding people with dementia, society must be reimagined so that they can continue to participate as active members of the community.
Our research team focuses on developing and evaluating dementia care approaches that are unprecedented in their integration of person-centered, strengths-based, and human rights–based perspectives. Through this work, we aim to contribute to the creation of a society in which people living with dementia can live with dignity, agency, and social inclusion. We seek to share the insights and outcomes of our research with the global community.
