In a bid to contain the outbreak, the government required mandatory testing for the first time since the health crisis began in January. The testing orders were first issued to those who had visited the dance venues, then expanded to cover other emerging clusters.

The cluster also spread to Ho Yuk Ching Willow Lodge, a care facility for the elderly in Tai Kok Tsui, after a 59-year-old caregiver there was confirmed to be infected on November 30. She lived in Tak Long Estate in Kai Tak, where some infected residents were also found to have visited the dance clubs.

Dr Joseph Tsang Kay-yan, an infectious disease specialist, said the super-spreading event in dance clubs created a sudden surge in cases, which increased the workload for contact tracers and piled pressure on isolation facilities.

A sitdown interview with James Hong can morph unexpectedly into an episode of "Dancing With the Character Actors." "Should we dance a little?" Hong suggested. "You have to think, 'This is a 92-year-old man,' too!"

Expressing their faith through dance is not only a call to prayer, but liberation for the worship dancers of the Chinese Community who come from a country that suppressed the expression of their Christian faith for years.

While other Asian communities have been represented at the annual Asian and Pacific Island Catholics Marian Pilgrimage in Washington, D.C. through dance and song, Chinese Catholics were not, said Sister Dong Hong. She wanted this to change.

The Chinese Catholic community currently has several offerings for faith formation and evangelization, including various Bible study groups, weekly prayer gathering, charismatic prayer, Sunday faith sharing groups, RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) class, Campus Ministry for Chinese students, and youth activity groups. But Sister Dong Hong thinks forming a dance program would appeal to the younger generations and bring Chinese Catholic numbers back up or surpass the 280 families once counted in the Archdiocese of Newark about a decade ago.

Our alumni dance, choreograph and teach. They build communities. They become doctors, midwives, therapists, lawyers, and entrepreneurs that start companies and businesses, as well as artist/scholars that engage in transformative interdisciplinary performance and research. See what some of our alumni are doing with dance. We invite our Dance Alums to send news, updates and links to websites to Michele Olerud at molerud@wesleyan.edu.

Since graduating from Wesleyan in 2013, I am a Teach For America corps member at Waipahu High School in Hawaii. I teach Special Education Social Studies, and this year, I was asked to teach Creative Dance, a for-credit dance class. The students are both thrown off by and drawn in to the Modern Dance mindsets and movement, and for me, having a creative outlet every day is definitely making my experience in the classroom more engaging and fun!
