Delta Sierra Science Project (DSSP)

About Us

The Delta Sierra Science Project (DSSP) is one of 13 sites of the California Science Project. The DSSP serves a five-county region that includes San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Amador, and Calaveras Counties . The DSSP guiding vision focuses on the teacher leader role as a lever for NGSS implementation within participating counties’ school districts. Although the Next Generation Science Standards were adopted in California in 2013, implementation of the standards has been inconsistent across schools and grade levels. The DSSP addresses this disparity through the development of local science teachers who can then support and inspire their colleagues to teach NGSS through phenomenon-based, student-centered, engaging, and equity-driven instructional approaches. The ideal outcome for this community of practice is to promote the participating teachers’ confidence to take on new science leadership roles and responsibilities, as well as to potentially extend their impact through publications and conference presentations. The DSSP SLT planning team wants teacher leaders to develop as a collaborative—to create among themselves professional ties and alliances fueled by relational trust and a shared vision of engaging, student-centered science education.
