Meet the coaches
Kari Deer
Kari started running competitively over 20 years ago at age 12. She was a star for the Columbia High School Blue Devils while she ran both Cross Country and Track and Field for them. She ran in college for SUNY Albany before transferring to the College of Saint Rose, where she was the first female to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships in school history. She later went on to be an assistant coach for the College of Saint Rose Cross Country team. Kari currently runs for the Willow Street Athletic Club racing team. She has competed in multiple marathons and countless other races ranging from 5K to half-marathon. Kari teaches elementary school in East Greenbush. She and her husband, John, live in Slingerlands where their two children, Olivia and Jack, attend school. Both of her children run for Delmar Track and Field.
John Deer
John started running competitively in high school for Bishop Maginn in Albany. He later attended the College of Saint Rose where he ran Cross Country. He has been the Varsity Girl’s Cross Country coach at Albany High School since 2016 and was the Varsity Boy’s Cross Country coach before that. John currently runs for the Wild Rovers racing team out of Delmar. He has competed in multiple marathons and countless other races ranging from 5K to ultra-marathon. John teaches history at Albany High School. He and his wife, Kari, live in Slingerlands where their two children, Olivia and Jack, attend school. Both of his children run for Delmar Track and field.
Scott Masters
Scott helps coach the field events including the long jump, high jump, and shot put. He previously coached at RPI working with pole vaulters and hurdlers and competed at SUNY Geneseo in the multi-events, pole vault, and hurdles. He currently resides in Delmar with his wife (Bridget) and two children and works at the New York State Department of Transportation.
Bill Davis - XC Grades 7-8
Bill Davis is the track/cross country meet registrar and Delmar Track and Field board member. Previously, Coach Bill served as volunteer and coach for Delmar Track and Field from 2012 to 2023 when his children Cameron, Taylor, and Rylee attended Bethlehem Central Schools. In high school, Bill was a football player and ran indoor and outdoor track distance events at Fonda-Fultonville. In his youth, Coach Bill enjoyed his time on the swim team, bowling team, and Little League baseball. At the University of Rochester, Bill ran cross-country, indoor and outdoor track and specialized in the 1500 meter run (outdoors), and 3000 meter run (indoors). Coach Bill encourages your children to try all track and field events such as the javelin, shot put, long jump, high jump, sprints and middle distance from the 100 to 800 meter runs, the 1500 meter run, and cross country in the fall. Most importantly, it is important for the kids to have fun and support each other. Professionally, Bill is a human resources professional for the New York State Department of Civil Service, and is married to his wife, Suzanne, approaching 30 years.
Rem Davis
Rem has been the throwing coach for the Delmar Track and Field Club for the past two years. He is a certified USA Track and Field Association coach. Rem competed for Hudson Falls Central High School throwing shot, discus, and javelin. In his senior year he qualified for nationals in javelin and was ranked in the top 20 in New York State for discus. Rem’s approach for coaching is to stress safety and fundamentals with the emphasis on fun.
In high school, he was also on the swim team and ran cross-country. Rem was a competitive swimmer while at the College of Saint Rose where he held a number of school records.
