Dell Power Manager allows you to select a Battery Setting that is optimized for specific computer usage patterns. For example, some settings focus on extending battery life, while others provide fast charge times. Available settings may be limited, depending on the battery. Possible battery settings include:

Battery life or battery run time is how long a battery lasts between charges. Battery life depends on battery capacity (number of cells or watt-hours (Wh) of a battery). More cells or higher watt-hours in the battery can power the laptop for a longer time under the same operating conditions.

The easiest way to get the best battery life out of your Dell laptop is to select one of the preconfigured power plans. The preonfigured power plans automatically adjust key settings that can have a significant impact on battery life, such as reducing screen brightness or dimming the display when you are not actively using your laptop.

To extend battery life as long as possible during a working session

Leaving your laptop plugged in all the time or never allowing your battery to fully charge when it's plugged in can actually reduce your battery's charge capacity and shorten its lifecycle. However, Dell has introduced two new battery charge settings, Dell Desktop Mode and Dell Longevity Mode, that help extend a laptop's battery pack lifecycle.

Desktop Mode monitors the charge status of the laptop battery, and if it spends most of the time at 100 percent charge while connected to the power adapter, Desktop Mode will automatically adjust the charge levels of the battery. The adjustments include regularly allowing the battery to discharge or drain, even while plugged in. The benefits help slow the reduction of charge capacity over time and may even decrease the need to purchase a replacement battery during the life of your laptop.

To turn on Desktop Mode in Microsoft Windows

I have made a few queries and posts into Dell Ultrabook battery life extension ideas... Since we are unable to remove the battery casually in standard notebooks, it always remains plugged in.. So that means you only have 2 options to power your system.. Leave the AC Adapter charged in or charge the battery up, then unplug adapter and use till its drained of power... We all know that leaving the AC Adapter in continuously to power the laptop can degrade the battery over time.. This is a MAJOR setback to ultrabooks in my opinion...

In my other laptops, standard notebooks I would ALWAYS detach the battery underneath so I can use only the AC Adapter as a power source thus extending my battery life.. Especially since there are times where I am using my laptop now for 4 plus hours or more at a time.. Almost on a daily basis...

We atleast have some new features where we can use the options to such as Dell Extended Battery life - such as powering the battery in the range of 50% to 100%... As well as a meter showing the effectiveness of "normal" battery options..

HOWEVER.... After rigorous testing I found that the battery charges fully every single time in the same amount of time!!! Never does it range between 50 to 80 to 100% ... every time I plug in the AC adapter, with all extended battery life options checked off.. the battery will charge to 100% each time..

All DELL has to do is come out with software to somehow electronically disconnect the battery as an option to strictly use AC Adapter power.. This day in age I am sure it can be done.. Especially since they already have this software tool to extend the battery life options...

Is anyone else having this same issue? Or can offer up some additional suggestions to extend battery life in my Dell Inspiron 15z Ultrabook?? IS there any way to disconnect the battery so I can only use the AC Adapter to power the laptop?

I am having the exact same issue! The battery life will be much better if the software actually works! I just tried updating all the firmware and software using Dell Update and it is STILL not working, without a replaceable battery the least Dell can do is to help customers extend the battery life. Please Dell Tech Support help us out here, much appreciated!

Yep I have to remove half a dozen screws to access the battery beneath the back cover, it is a complete pain in the side. I also wish that there was an option that would completely disconnect the laptop from the battery and rely wholly on AC to power the laptop. That would be a great alternative to these "battery saving options" from dell.

Oh, wait sorry. The Dell extended battery life settings are in the Dell battery meter. I know where that is. But it still doesn't have a desktop mode... I think my laptop has the hardware capability. So why can't I use this?

Now, this is weird. My pc (INSPIRON N5050) came with the extended battery life feature. I did the upgrade to Windows 8 and it was working just as fine. Only yesterday, my pc could not boot up, so I had to reset. Now, it can't load the extended battery life anymore. Saying it is not supported on my pc.

My friend's pc (INSPIRON 3520) came with the extended battery life feature as well. Her hard disk got bad so we took it to Dell Service Center and it was replaced. After re-installing the OS and the subsequent upgrade to Windows 8, the extended battery life feature is working just as fine.

Have you tried installing the software the works with windows 8? I've been formatting computers lately and i found out that some drivers that works on win7 doesn't work on win8/8.1. i downloaded the drivers under win 8/8.1 category. My extended battery option is working fine and i'm using win8.1 x64, dell inspiron 3420.

For what it's worth, on the Dell XPS 15 (model 9550), this option seems to work in linux if you enable in the BIOS. That is, the XPS 15 provides both an Windows tool (Dell Command Power Manager, or something like that) and BIOS options to set the battery change behavior.

Please try the following steps which might help us to disable the 'Extended battery life' option:

-- Right click the Battery icon on the task bar towards the bottom right of the desktop and select 'Battery Meter'.

-- Dell Battery meter pop up opens, select Battery status.

-- Uncheck the option 'Enable Dell extended Battery life' from the Battery status section.

-- Restart the computer and check the functionality.

Please try the steps and write back with results.

Some apps let you manage background activity. If you find that an app is using a lot of battery when running in the background, you can change the setting for apps that allow it. Select Start  > Settings  > System  > Power & battery  > Battery usage. Under Battery usage per app, see which apps might be using more battery in the background. For an app that let you manage the background activity, select More options  > Manage background activity. On the settings page for that app, change the setting for Let this app run in the background.

Select Start  > Settings  > Apps  > Video playback . For Battery options, select Optimize for battery life. To help save more battery, select the Play video at a lower resolution when on battery check box.

The first stop on our battery-life betterment tour is your laptop's performance management tool. In Windows 10, it's a slider accessed from the battery icon in the task bar. It aims to group all of the settings that affect battery life into a few easy-to-understand categories.

Depending on which laptop and which version of macOS you have, you may see additional options in the Energy Saver preferences pane. These include "Optimize video streaming while on battery" for disabling HDR video playback and "Optimized battery charging." Some Macs also have an Energy Mode setting, which is similar to the Windows performance management tool described above. If you see Energy Mode in the Battery section of system preferences, you've got the following options:

Having multiple apps and processes running on your system at the same time will chew through battery life more quickly, and chances are you probably aren't actively using everything that's currently running on your PC. In Windows, the Settings app is the first step to find energy-hogging programs.

Type "See which apps are affecting your battery life" into the Windows 10 search bar for a list of apps that are consuming the most power. In Windows 11, you can access this list in the Power & Battery settings pane under Battery Usage. If you see an app that you rarely use hogging a lot of power, make sure you close it. Often, these are apps you've opened in the background and forgotten about, such as Spotify or Adobe Reader.

On an Apple MacBook laptop, to see if your battery is nearing the end of its lifespan, hold the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to reveal the battery status. If you see a "Replace Now" or "Service Battery" message, your battery is likely functioning far below its original capacity.

Some recent laptops can now automatically monitor the temperature history and charging patterns of the battery. Via software from the manufacturer, this information can be used to adjust "full" charging to remain below 100% of the battery's capacity if you don't regularly use it. (Reducing the number of charging cycles can help prolong the battery's life.)

These strategies will help you make the most of the battery you have. If you're in the market for a new laptop, however, and battery runtime is one of your key concerns, check out our roundup of the laptops we've tested with the best battery life.

I haven't been able to find anything via Googling. Is there any downside to using ExpressCharge? Does it slowly reduce battery life over time? Does it make the power supply overheat? Will it cause a non-Dell battery to explode? Does it steal snacks from the fridge?

Thank you for your question and answer. We are experiencing extremely short battery life in all of our E5530s from Dell. All of these laptops have express charge as a default in Bios.. Now I know what the deal is. :)
