The strongest, most reliable tool in identifying unknown remains and solving cold cases is through DNA. Recent scientific advancements now make it possible to identify unknown remains through Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG). FGG is a process through which scientists reverse-engineer a family tree using law enforcement-accessible DNA databases.
Increasing the DNA sampling from our local community increases the likelihood of identifying the unidentified victims in DeKalb County.
People may donate DNA for two separate purposes:
One sample for uploading to law enforcement databases
The second sample to provide DNA via ancestry kits
With consent from the participant, the ancestry kits can be mailed to ancestry databases that allow law enforcement access to assist with investigations and identification efforts.
To schedule an appointment to donate a DNA sample, please email DA_ColdCase@DeKalbCountyGA.gov.
If you have previously completed a commercial ancestry kit (i.e. AncestryDNA, 23andme, MyHeritageDNA, etc.) and would like to upload your profile to law enforcement accessible websites (GEDmatch or FamilyTreeDNA) we can assist you with that process.
