As with all medical subspecialties, endocrinology has had the advent of new medications, conditions, and discoveries over the last decade. This book includes many new authors who have contributed at least 88 new chapters.

While other textbooks cover endocrinology comprehensively, oftentimes they focus either on the basic science or clinical aspects of the field. This book is a unique reference that includes basic science aspects as part of each section.

A renowned endocrinologist specializing in diseases of the thyroid, Leslie DeGroot, MD, professor emeritus in the departments of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Chicago, former director of the Thyroid Study Unit and chief of endocrinology at the University of Chicago, died surrounded by his family on Oct. 23, 2018 in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. His death came one month after his 90th birthday.

Les DeGroot was a giant in endocrinology and thyroid disease. He had a very broad impact through his original scientific papers, text books and participation in important societies and organizations. Endocrinology at the University of Chicago benefitted immensely from his contributions. Personally I am grateful to Dr. DeGroot for the role he played to ensure that I along with the other endocrine fellows received outstanding clinical and scientific training. His legacy will live on through his contributions to knowledge of endocrinology and through the trainees who benefitted from the education they received at the University of Chicago.

Leslie was an outstanding clinician, dedicated to his patients. He was omnivorous in his interests, whether in endocrinology, history, literature, or politics. The gleam in his eye was never brighter than when interacting with trainees. He provided service unselfishly on committees, journals, and leadership roles in the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and Endocrine Society. He served as president of the ATA, on the Council of the Endocrine Society, as an associate editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, and on the editorial boards of many journals. He was recognized with numerous lectureships and awards, including the Distinguished Educator award from the Endocrine Society. Leslie De Groot cherished his family, friends, sailing, and socializing. On behalf of his many friends, patients, trainees, and colleagues, we can treasure his positive impact on all of us. We have lost a giant in endocrinology, but he leaves an indelible mark on our field and a warm place in our hearts.

J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Lewis Landsberg Dean of the Feinberg School, has received the Fred Conrad Koch Award, the highest honor bestowed by The Endocrine Society in recognition of exceptional contributions to endocrinology.

He has published more than 250 scientific articles, including reports in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Genetics, Science, and the Journal of Clinical Investigation, as well as several specialty journals in endocrinology.

After receiving his MD and PhD degrees in 1981 from the University of North Carolina, he went on to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for clinical training in internal medicine. He rose through the faculty ranks at the Harvard Medical School to become associate professor of medicine and chief of the Thyroid Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital before moving to Northwestern in 1993. Dr. Jameson joined the Feinberg faculty as chief of the division of endocrinology, metabolism and molecular medicine. In 2000, he became chair of the department of medicine. 006ab0faaa
