This Declaration was developed by a group of individuals from within academic and scholarly communication spheres who are alarmed by emerging acts of censorship by the U.S. government. The censorship focuses, so far, on:
lists of words within federally funded research proposals and publications that are either now forbidden or flagged,
restrictions limiting who federally funded researchers are allowed to co-author research papers with,
eliminating the inclusion of information and data regarding certain topics from federal publications, and
removing long-established data and information from federal agency websites.
We anticipate that the censorship activities of the U.S. government will continue to expand during this administration.
The individuals who drafted and are currently promoting this Declaration are doing so in their capacity as private citizens and not as employees of specific organizations.
