#DefendResearch was founded in early 2025 by a group of individuals from within academic and scholarly communication spheres who were alarmed by emerging acts of censorship by the U.S. government. This censorship continues, with a focus on:

• creating lists of words that are either now forbidden or flagged within federally funded research proposals and publications

• removing long-established data and information from federal agency websites

• restricting allowable co-authors for scientists and scholars in publications that emerge from federally funded research

We anticipate that the censorship activities of the U.S. government will continue to expand during this administration.
