In regard to his game, Okongwu is a 6-foot-9 center right now, but one who protects the rim at a high level due to his vertical leap, length, timing and power. He plays with terrific force due to his strong 245-pound frame. He finished 20th in the NCAA in block rate, and USC as a team was about 5 percentage points better at protecting the rim when he was on the floor versus when he was off it. His 18.4 defensive rebounding rate might look pedestrian, but I think it more had to do with playing next to another true center in Nick Rakocevic. On top of that, Okongwu is a terrific defender on the perimeter due to his quickness, flexibility and ability to get down in a defensive stance. Basically, I thought it was an abject embarrassment that the Pac-12 coaches awarded Tyler Bey Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year over Okongwu. Not only did Okongwu play better individually on defense, but he led USC to the top defensive rating in the conference while Colorado finished in the middle of the pack.
