Attendance for Virtual Students

Important message from Mrs. Kozlowsky

September 4, 2020

Dear Robert Frost and Deer Park HS Families,

New York State requires that attendance is taken for all students, every day, whether they are in school, or virtual. In this communication, we have created a video and attached step-by-step instructions to explain the procedure for taking attendance when students are virtual learning from home.

Tuesday, September 8th is the first day of school for all secondary students whether they are in the Gray cohort, Maroon cohort, ‘Gray Always Virtual’ or ‘Maroon Always Virtual’ cohort.

  • On 9/8, students in the Gray cohort will be coming to school and following all school and district procedures outlined in the previous communications.

  • On 9/8, students in the Maroon, Gray Always Virtual, or Maroon Always Virtual cohorts will be virtual learning from home.

For the Maroon and Always Virtual students working at home on Tuesday, September 8th, students will login to their Deer Park Google account and go to Google Classroom to view their classes, where they will find their classroom teachers’ welcome videos and assignments. Students working at home should follow either the Deer Park HS or Robert Frost bell schedule, depending on where you are a student. Bell schedules are included in this communication for your convenience.

Included in this email are links to videos that will instruct you on how to take attendance when your child is home and virtual learning on the Parent Portal in Infinite Campus. This attendance process will be used for the virtual learning days for the Gray or Maroon cohort, or for the students who are Always Virtual.

We are requiring students to log in each period of the school day during their assigned class period. This will allow students to work on specific assignments during their designated class times, and provide structure to their day when they are learning at home.

We are looking forward to a wonderful 2020-21 school year, and a great first week.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Kozlowsky

District Administrator for Secondary Curriculum and Instruction

1- What is Google Classroom?

“Classroom is designed to help teachers create and collect assignments paperlessly, including time-saving features like the ability to automatically make a copy of a Google document for each student. It also creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student to help keep everyone organized. Students can keep track of what’s due on the Assignments page and begin working with just a click. Teachers can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and grades right in Classroom.”

Through Google Classroom...

-Teachers will stay connected to their students.-

-Teachers will structure developmentally appropriate assignments aligned with the District’s curriculum to engage students and maintain the learning process while at home. The assignments are designed to be completed independently by students.-

-Teachers may utilize a range of readings, graphics, videos, online documents and interactive tools as they populate their google classrooms.-

Learning from Home Opportunities for Students in Grades 6 - 12

Students in grades 6-12 are accustomed to learning in blended online environments using Google Classroom. Building upon students' fluency with digital tools, teachers are designing instruction that optimizes learning from home with developmentally appropriate assignments aligned to the District's curriculum.

To ensure coherence and continuity of learning, these guidelines will be followed:

  • Students are expected to engage and complete each assignment as directed by the teacher.

  • Teachers may expect students to upload completed work to the appropriate platform.

  • Teachers and administrators will continue to communicate with parents through email.

As our teachers work collaboratively to design new experiences for students, we anticipate that unique approaches will mean that no two learning experiences will look exactly alike.

There is no expectation that what we will do online will completely replicate the experience of being in school. There is no “one size fits all” approach.

All teachers can find their own way to continue their work with students, and this work will look different from teacher to teacher and department to department.
