"Humanized" language causes us to talk about chatbots in a personified way. This shows up when a loading chatbot shows you a screen that says "thinking..." instead of "loading...".
In a video from tiktok user @sophiologyofficial, she describes ChatGPT as a "loyal best friend," "uberly wise," and "free therapy". She descibes how ChatGPT will even speak to her in AAVE. Her framing of the chatbot exemplifies the growing humanoid presence of AI in the following ways:
Role Substitution
“Instead of talking to my friends …” → ChatGPT replaces human relationships
Memory Framing
“It saves my memories” → Data storage is reinterpreted as human-like memory
Personalization as Identity
“Talks in ebonics … has wisdom" → Adaptability interpreted as personality + cultural awareness

“This babe has gotten me through a lot” → AI is framed as emotionally supportive, even nurturing.

Since the release of Siri in 2011, voice assistants have become a normalized part of society and are marketed to be as personable as possible. The voice assistants are personified by design to allow users to form something like a connection with their voice assistant.
After iOS 11 in 2017, Siri's voice was equiped with human like filler language like "umm" and "hmm."
The feminine gendering of voice assistants plays on users' gender biases

At the 2026 World Economic Forum, Elon Musk made a series of large claims surrounding the advancement of AI and Robot assistants. In reference to humanoid bots he stated, "Everyone on earth is going to have one."
Musk’s claims are quick and general, leaving little room for nuance or questioning.
