Conference in Toruń
Dr Andrea Bernier has participated in the International Conference "Group Identity – Social Structures – Diversity in Premodern Europe" (Toruń, 10–11 October 2025) organized by Dr Anna Maleszka (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) and Prof. Dr Matthew Stevens (Swansea University). Dr Bernier presented the paper General laws and regional identities in the Later Roman Empire: The evidence of the Theodosian Code.
Research stay in London
Dr Andrea Bernier has completed another 2-week research stay in London (14-28 September). Host institution was the Library of the Institute of Classical Studies (https://ics.sas.ac.uk/). Conference in Naples (Italy)
Dr Andrea Bernier participated on 21-22 July to a conference in Naples on "Conflicts and Crisis in the Government of Rome in the 5th Century" organized by the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II), under the direction of Professor Umberto Roberto. Dr Bernier delivered a paper on the food-supply of Rome, focusing on the activities of the corporation of Roman shippers entrusted with transporting the food along the Tiber (Nov.Val. 9 e la corporazione dei navicularii amnici).
Presentation at the Forum of Polish Romanists in Gdańsk
On June 20th, 2025, Dr Andrea Bernier participated in the "II Ogólnopolskie Forum Romanistów (2nd National Forum of Polish Romanists): Law and politics in ancient Rome", held at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk. Dr Bernier presented a report on the results of his research project on the sources of the Theodosian Code. Dr Bernier would like to express his gratitude to Professor Jacek Wiewioroski for the organization of the meeting and to all the participants for intense and fruitful discussion.
Presentation at the meeting of the Byzantine Commission of the Polish Historical Society in Toruń
On May 24th, 2025, Dr Andrea Bernier delivered a paper on The sources of the Theodosian Code at the meeting of the Byzantine Commission of the Polish Historical Society, that for the first time met in Toruń, at the Institute of History and Archival Studies of the Nicolaus Copernicus University .

Seminar in Bari (Italy) - Roman Law
On March 21st, 2025, Dr Andrea Bernier held a seminar at the Department of Roman Law in the University of Bari. The seminar was dedicated to the presentation of Dr Bernier's project on the sources of the Theodosian Code. Dr Bernier would like to express his gratitude to all the participants and especially to Professor Andrea Lovato, head of the Department and of the Faculty of Law, for the invitation to present and discuss his work.
Seminar in Bari (Italy) - Roman Epigraphy
On March 19th, 2025, Dr Andrea Bernier held a seminar for students in the MA and PhD programmes on the ancient world at the University of Bari. The seminar was devoted to the examination of a new inscription found in Beirut and an analysis of the administrative policy of Constantius II Augustus in the East. Dr Bernier would like to express his gratitutde to Dr Francesco Mongelli, head of the course in Roman epigraphy, and to all participants for the stimulating meeting and discussion.
Intersectoral Secondment Period in Italy
Dr Andrea Bernier carried out his intersectoral secondment period at the publishing house Edipuglia, Bari-Italy (10-28 March 2025). Dr Bernier would like to express his gratitude to Dr Carlo Ceglie, amministratore unico, and Dr Marta Bellifemine, for their hospitality and the opportunity to carry out the intersectoral secondment period at this prestigious and very active publishing house.
Conference in Bonn (Germany)
On February 3rd-5th, 2025, Dr Andrea Bernier participated at the conference Connecting Late Antiquities organized at the University of Bonn, within the CLA Research Project. Dr Bernier delivered a paper (The praetorian prefecture 50 years after PLRE I) focusing on the analysis of the reconstruction of the praetorian prefecture made by A.H.M. Jones in the PLRE I (1971), and on the use of legislative evidence for prosopographical research on Late Antiquity. A conference report has now been published on the platform H-Soz-Kult (Connecting Late Antiquities | H-Soz-Kult. Kommunikation und Fachinformation für die Geschichtswissenschaften | Geschichte im Netz | History in the web).
Participation in Ewa Wipszycka Warsaw Late Antique Seminar
On December 12th, 2025, Dr Andrea Bernier participated at the Ewa Wipszycka Warsaw Late Antique Seminar, delivering the paper "Deconstructing the Theodosian Code. Archives and collections of laws in the later Roman empire. Dr Bernier outlined the main lines of his research project and discussed the results achieved so far, with special focus on the legislation issued in the Eastern part of the Empire included in the Theodosian Code.
Participation at conference in Toruń
Dr Andrea Bernier and prof. dr hab. Sz. Olszaniec participated to the conference "Optimus civis. Ideał obywatela i władcy a rzeczywistość w Rzymie w okresie schyłku republiki i wczesnego cesarstwa" held in Toruń on September 26th-27th 2024. Dr Bernier presented a paper on the vocabulary of citizenship in imperial legislation (Cives, provinciales, populus: the vocabulary of citizenship in late antiquity), prof. Olszaniec delivered a paper on the sale of children as slaves in the late Roman empire (Między ideałem a praktyką - sprzedaż dzieci w niewolę w okresie późnego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego).
Presentation of the research project at UMK
On June 11th 2024, Dr Andrea Bernier presented and discussed with scholars and students of the University of Toruń his research project on the source of the Theodosian Code.
Participation at the VI Colloquia Ceranea in Łódź
Dr Andrea Bernier will participate at the sixth international, interdisciplinary scholarly conference Colloquia Ceranea, organised between 9 and 11 May 2024 by the Waldemar Ceran Research Centre for the History and Culture of the Mediterranean Area and South-East Europe “Ceraneum”, University of Łódź, Poland (see the PROGRAMME). Dr Bernier will deliver a paper on the changes that affected the administrative system of the Eastern part of the Roman empire in the 4th century AD (abstract here: Colloquia Ceranea).
Participation in the Toruń Festival of Art and Science
Dr Andrea Bernier will participate in the 22. Toruński Festiwal Nauki i Sztuki (Toruń Festival of Art and Science) with the lecture 'Rest or Perish? The introduction of Sunday as a day of rest in the Western world'. Research stay in London
Dr Andrea Bernier completed a 2-week research stay in London (17 February-2 March) for collecting literature concerning his research project. Host institutions were the Library of the Institute of Classical Studies ( https://ics.sas.ac.uk/) and the main library of UCL (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/using-library/libraries-and-study-spaces/main-library ). Lecture at UMK
On 17 January 2024, dr Andrea Bernier gave a lecture for the students of the Department of Applied Linguistics and Department of Italian Philology in the Faculty of Humanities at UMK. The lecture was dedicated to the modern history of an Italian region (Emilia-Romagna. Racconti e immagini di una regione italiana) and was delivered in Italian.
