Declarations for Javier Gonzalez
I have attempted to list all potentially relevant interests, but acknowledge that I may have overlooked some. I also realise some of these are subjective judgements and therefore agreement/disagreement can depend on perspective.
I believe the reader has every right to consider these interests when deciding why I hold a position on a topic. However, when discussing or debating a topic with me, I will respect objective arguments to oppose my position rather than simply deferring to these interests. I will aim to reciprocate in the same manner. In science this essentially means: 1) discussion of the data; 2) the methods used to collect the data; and/or 3) the logic linking the data to an inference.
Scientific interest
I am a full-time academic scientist interested in human metabolism. With a specific emphasis on carbohydrate and fat metabolism. In this role, I am judged on publishing manuscripts is high-impact journals and on securing grant income. This can lead to specific topics which align with these goals being a focus.
Religious interest
I was raised Catholic but have been a strong agnostic since adolescence. I find theological and philosophical debate interesting and a useful tool to sharpen critical thinking.
Heritage
I was born in England but am half-Spanish with dual UK-Spanish citizenship. I therefore view these countries and cultures particularly fondly.
Personal interests
I enjoy cooking and eating food, including high-carbohydrate (pasta), high fat and sugar (cookies) and high-protein (meat). I also enjoy wine and beer. My enjoyment of these foods and drinks may influence my subjective position on them.
I played rugby as an adolescent and have always participated in exercise regularly. I exercise almost every day and therefore am likely to have a positive bias in my view of exercise and physical activity.
Political interest
In general, I hold politically centrist views with respect to society and economy, with a slightly libertarian slant.
Financial interest
I hold shares in Domin and a portfolio which is managed independently (and I do not have an awareness of the organisations who are invested in). I have a Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension, and am not aware of the organisations in which this is invested in.
