I began my career as an elementary teacher and worked in informal science education before pursuing my PhD in science education at Indiana University. After 13 years and tenure and promotion to Full Professor at University of Missouri , I relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 2017. I am currently a professor at Western Washington University jointly appointed in Science, Math, & Technology Education and Elementary Education.
As a former elementary teacher, I am especially interested in supporting prospective and practicing elementary teachers in learning to teach science in ways that meet the needs of all students. My research focuses on designing and studying innovative structures and strategies for teacher preparation and professional development. These include practicum-based professional development programs, instructional rounds, and cycles of repeated teaching of the same lesson. Central to this work is the integration fo research and practice, and the development of teacher-facing tools, resources, and instructional materials.
I am a past president of the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE) and currently serve as the Director of the Research Divsion of the National Science Teaching Association.
