Biographies on the seven inductees are below:

CHUCK COKER (Dover High School/University of Delaware)

One of the top players ever to come out of Dover, Coker later became a slugging first baseman at the University of Delaware.

Coker was an All-Star for Dover Little League for all 12 years that he competed, leading the team to the Little League Eastern Regionals.  He went on to enjoy an outstanding career at Dover High School in 1974-78, earning a spot on the varsity as a freshman. He led the Senators to consecutive Henlopen Conference championships in 1977 and 1978 for head coach Danny Roberts and batted .380 as a senior when he earned All-State notice.

He moved on to the University of Delaware where he was a standout first baseman for Hall of Fame head coach Bob Hannah in 1979-82. Coker was a four-year standout, serving as captain as a senior, and ranking among the all-time UD career leaders for runs batted in (10th with 163), walks (16th with 100), hits (18th with 234), and games played (17th with 193). He led the Blue Hens to 30+ wins each of his four seasons as Delaware won three East Coast Conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times.

Coker went on to earn MVP honors in the All-American Amateur Baseball Association in Baltimore, Md. and also played in the Cape Cod League. A current resident of Downingtown, Pa., he remained active in the game and coached his three daughters in softball.  Coker’s father, Ed, is also a member of the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame as a long-time coach and administrator for the Dover Little League.

STEVE HYDE (Tower Hill School Coach)

One of the most successful high school coaches in Delaware history, Hyde made a name for himself at Tower Hill School in Wilmington where he consistently guided his teams to outstanding seasons.

A 1959 graduate of Tower Hill, he played baseball, football, and basketball and captained the basketball and baseball teams as a senior. During his four-year playing career in baseball, he played in 46 games and batted .269. Among his teammates at Tower Hill were former Philadelphia Phillies owner and Delaware Baseball Hall of Famer Ruly Carpenter, former Delaware governor and U.S. representative Mike Castle, and former longtime National Basketball Association executive Pat Williams. ]

He moved on to Williams College where he starred in baseball and football and served as the baseball team’s captain as a senior before earning his degree in 1964.

After Williams, Hyde returned to his high school alma mater and served as the school’s football coach from 1974 until 1988 and its baseball head coach from 1981 until 2000.

In baseball, he led his teams to a 20-year record of 234-134 (.636), 10 Independent Conference championships, including seven straight titles in 1984-90, 11 state tournament appearances, and a state title in 1987. He earned the Delaware Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in both 1984 and 1987.

Hyde passed away in June, 2023. He and his wife, Sally, have three children.

PAUL MURPHY (University of Delaware/Minor League Player/MLB Scout)

Paul Murphy was All-American infielder at the University of Delaware before competing in the minor leagues and making a name for himself as a successful professional scout.

A three-year standout for Hall of Fame head coach Bob Hannah at Delaware, Murphy earned All-American honors and was named the East Coast Conference Player of the Year as a junior in 1986 when he batted .294 with 13 home runs and 53 RBI as a third baseman.

He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the ninth round of the MLB Draft in 1986 and again by the Baltimore Orioles in 1987.  He played one season in minor league baseball at Bluefield, WVa. and batted .243 with 8 home runs and 21 RBI. He also played in the Delaware Semi-Pro league, was a two-time All-Star, and led his team to the 1986 league championship.

Murphy moved to the coaching ranks where he served as an assistant coach at John Dickinson High School in Delaware and was head coach of the Stahl Post #30 American Legion team that won the state title. He also was head coach of the Delaware Grand Slam Diamonds team that made three National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series appearances. In his nine years of coaching, 28 of his players were drafted and six advanced to the Major Leagues.

He then moved on to a successful Major League scouting career in 1997. He served six years as a part-time scout with the Chicago White Sox, 15 years as an area supervisor with the Philadelphia Phillies (2008 World Series champions), and seven years presently as a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2020 World Series champions). He was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Scouting Association Hall of Fame in 2022. A member of the Ardsley (N.Y.) High School Hall of Fame, Murphy presently resides in Wilmington, Del. with his two children.

JOHN NELSON (Dickinson High School/Little League Coach)

John Nelson found coaching success no matter what the level during his distinguished career.

He began his coaching career at Midway Little League (now Pike Creek LL) in 1992 and four years later led its Senior Little League All-Star team to an East Region championship and a third-place finish at the Senior League World Series in 1996.

From there he moved to the high school ranks, starting as an assistant coach at John Dickinson High School (Pike Creek area) in 1997 and taking over the head coaching reigns the following season. During his head coaching career that spanned 18 seasons (1998-2015), Nelson led the Rams to an overall record of 232-122 (.655), 10 conference championships, 13 state tournament appearances, seven final four appearances, and state runner-up finishes in 1998 and 2005. His 232 wins currently rank 15th all-time in Delaware high school history.

During his tenure, he earned Blue Hen Conference Coach of the Year honors five times (1998, 2003-06), mentored 38 All-State players, including 19 first team selections, and 130 all-conference picks, including 53 first-teamers. Many of his players moved on to play at the college level.

Now retired, he currently serves as Lead Pastor of Christ Community Church, is a licensed insurance agent, and still manages teams at the Pike Creek Little League. He and his wife, Debbie, have two sons and eight grandchildren.

ROBERT “BIFF” NEWNAM (Little League Administrator)

Newnam has devoted over 60 years of his life to the sport of baseball, from his days as a bat boy, as an outstanding high school and American Legion player, as a successful coach at several different levels, and as a nationally-recognized administrator.

After a playing career that included successful stints at Greenbrier (WVa.) Military School, Valley Forge (Pa.) Military Academy, and Post 14 American Legion, he moved on to the coaching ranks.

He served two years with the American Legion Post 14 team in Smyrna before joining the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend (MOT) Little League in 1978 and beginning a legendary 21-year tenure at Smyrna-Clayton Little League in 1980. He coached the 16-18 year-old teams at Smyrna-Clayton and compiled an overall record of 250-171 (.596) that included a 1999 season that saw the team win the district title and East Region title and participate in the Big League World Series in Arizona.

While coaching at Smyrna-Clayton LL, he also served on the board of directors for 19 years, was named. Life Member, and served on the District 1 staff that helped coordinate the annual Big League East Regionals. He later served as a national Little League District Administrator in 2002-21, served on the East Region Advisory Staff for 19 years, and on the President’s Advisory Committee in 2008-11. He also served on the Little League Congress rules committee and received the East Region Meritorious Service Award in 2007.

A recent retiree from the Delaware State Fire School, he resides in Smyrna with his wife, Pauline, and has two children and three grandchildren.

PEDRO SWANN, JR. (Delaware State/Minor League Player)

Swann enjoyed a Hall of Fame baseball career at St. Mark’s High School and Delaware State University and later played three seasons in the Major Leagues.

A two-time All-State outfielder for Hall of Fame head coach Tom Lemon at St. Mark’s, the power-hitting Swann earned second team honors as a junior in 1987 and first team laurels in 1988 when he led the Spartans to a 19-2 record and the state championship. He hit home runs in both the semifinals and finals – on the same day – to propel the Spartans to glory. He was inducted into the St. Mark’s Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Swann moved on to the college ranks and became one of the finest athletes in Delaware State University history during a stellar career in 1989-91. He was a three-time All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection, finishing his career with a .421 batting average, 26 home runs, and 131 runs batted in. He hit .449 as a freshman in 1989 when he led the Hornets to the MEAC title. He was selected to the DSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 and had his No. 1 jersey retired in 2004.

He was selected in the 26th round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft by the Atlanta Braves and went on to a 16-year minor league career that saw him play 1,818 games, bat .287, hit 181 home runs, knock in 924 runs, and steal 131 bases.

He reached the ultimate dream in 2000 when he made his Major League debut with the Braves. He also played briefly in the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002 and with the Baltimore Orioles in 2003. He played in 25 MLB games and hit his only major league home run off Roger Clemens.

Swann later served as head coach at University of Maryland-Eastern Shore for two seasons and currently operates Pro Prime Sports Academies in Elkton and Middletown, teaching the game to young players dreaming of playing in the Big Leagues. He and his wife, Galayia, have three children and reside in New Castle.

STAHL POST (American Legion Team)

One of the most successful baseball programs at any level in the state, the Joseph B. Stahl American Legion Post #30 in New Castle has been in existence for 59 years this spring. They become the eighth team/program to be inducted into the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame.
