There is nothing quite as sweet as seeing a child snuggled up with the family dog. But what about the dog who isn't as comfortable with kids? What about the dog who is on the smaller side and needs a more gentle touch?
"Dear My Favorite Human" is a love letter from the family dog to their young human sibling. The book is told through the pup's point of view and aims to educate, encourage, and build safe interactions.
"This book is adorable-from the written words to the illustrations. I read it to my 2 year old grandaughter, and after her begging to read it again; I said no. She obviously loves it!"
"Great gift for new parents!"
"Super sweet book from a dog's perspective about how to be handled by their little owner with care."
"This book is so sweet! My little ones absolutely love it."
"I love this book! The story is perfect for little ones. A must buy for the littles with pets."
"This book is perfect for my grandson. The book is so wonderful as it highlights how we need to remind our little ones to be gentle with our fur babies."
"This is the sweetest "teach you kiddos how to treat their pets" book I've ever read!"
"I remember when we met,
you were wrapped snug and tight.
I kissed your sweet button nose,
it was love at first sight. "
"I watched as you learned to roll,
crawl, then begin to walk.
I snuck in for your first bath,
and heard you start to talk."
EmmyLou was the first pup to inspire the book. Emmy is a little dog, about ten pounds. The author, Amy, was tired of telling her 3-year-old son, Phoenix, to be gentle with her when playing together. Amy started searching for books to help teach her son how to be gentle with Emmy. That is when the idea popped into her mind. She asked herself, "Why don't I just write it?" This is how the book was born.
Gram is the second pup to inspire the book. Gram is very skiddish around children and strangers. He doesn't like loud noises or sudden movements. Amy ended up reaching out to a local dog trainer, Wag It Better Family Training, to help teach her husband and her how to keep Gram and their two toddlers safe. Some of the tips that the dog behaviorist gave her are included in this book.
At an early age, Amy loved words. Journaling and poetry was how she expressed her feeling. While she didn't set out to become a children's author, it fell into her lap when she found herself trying to teach her young son how to be careful with the family pups. She currently resides in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with her husband, two young children and two fluffy pups. In her free time, she loves to write about motherhood and faith. You can follow her at:
Whether through art or music, Susan's goal is to capture the love and beauty of the moment; you often will find her working on a Carolina coastal landscape in graphite. Susan was thrilled when Amy asked her to partner in illustrating "Dear My Favorite Human." Their visions naturally alligned as they found inspiration in the photos of friend and family with their sweet pups. Susan lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with her husband, son, boglen terrier, and two babydoll sheep. Follow to see her art at:

"Dear my favorite human,
you're getting very tall.
But the bigger that you grow,
the more that I stay small."
"We can't play like we once did,
you're now so very strong.
This is new to both of us,
in how we get along."
"No symphony orchestra ever played music like a two-year-old child laughing with a puppy."

Our interview with Local 2-Nashville
Amy with her family dog, Honey
For as long as I can remember, I’ve written letters.
When I was a chid, I would sneak letters into my dad’s suitcase before he left on business trips.
When our family dog passed away, I wrote her a goodbye letter, because that was the only way I knew how to process grief as a middle schooler. Fun fact: This may or may not be our next book;)
When I was struggling with an eating disorder, I would write my mom letters about how I was feeling because I couldn’t speak in person about it.
When I was going through loneliness from singleness, heartache after a breakup, or confusion in what I was supposed to be doing-I would write.
I don’t know how many journals I have had throughout my life-but there are many.
I don’t write as much as I once did. A four-year-old and a two-year-old have that effect.
But when I look back now at my life, I see how God was always leading me to write the, “Dear My” series.
Yes, it started with a dog, but the places it will go after, I am not fully sure yet.
I have some ideas-but like everything, I can’t see the big picture.
And maybe that’s a good thing.
The “Dear My” series is from the little girl who made sense of her world and feelings through words.
The “Dear My” series is from the older mom who was reminded that some dreams sneak up on you when you least expect them, especially when you are over 40.
The “Dear My” series is from friends who were destined to create something together-to put forth a little bit of beauty in this word-whether through illustrations or words that rhyme.
Thank you for being a part of the journey.
Love, Amy
