EVAN HANSEN
(Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17-18) • Pop Tenor: G2-B4 (C5 Falsetto)
Smart, sincere, and excruciatingly self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background, a supporting player in his own life, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, what might be worse, no one noticing him at all.
ZOE MURPHY
(Female-Presenting, Playable Age 16-17) • Pop Soprano: F3-E5
Sensitive and sophisticated, with a sharp sense of humor, Zoe could care less about the status games and popularity rites of high school. She feels a terrible ambivalence over her brother’s death.
CONNOR MURPHY
(Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17-18) • Pop Bari-Tenor: C3-G#4
A troubled, volatile student who feels disconnected from those around him. Connor is often angry and unpredictable, masking profound pain and loneliness. After his death, Connor’s presence continues to shape the story, representing the weight of unresolved trauma and the stories we tell about one another.
ALANA BECK
(Female-Presenting, Playable Age 17-18) • Pop Soprano: F3-E5
An overachieving, hyper-involved student who appears confident and composed but is driven by her own need to be noticed and validated. Alana believes deeply in making a difference and uses activism and leadership as a way to cope with her fear of insignificance.
JARED KLEINMAN
(Male-Presenting, Playable Age 17-18) • Pop Tenor: D3-B4
Evan’s family friend and reluctant confidant. Wry, sarcastic, and socially savvy, Jared uses humor and detachment to shield himself from vulnerability. Though he often appears self-interested, Jared ultimately longs for connection and recognition, even if he struggles to show it.
HEIDI HANSEN
(Female-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Mezzo Soprano: F3-Eb5 (belt)
Evan’s single mother. Loving, practical, and exhausted, Heidi works tirelessly to provide for her son while grappling with guilt over not always being present. She deeply wants to understand Evan and protect him, even when she does not fully grasp his inner world. Strong, grounded, and emotionally honest.
CYNTHIA MURPHY
(Female-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Soprano F3-E5 (belt)
Connor and Zoe’s mother. Polished, compassionate, and grieving, Cynthia clings to the idea that her son was understood and accepted. Her need for connection and meaning in the wake of loss makes her both tender and vulnerable, driving much of the emotional momentum of the story.
LARRY MURPHY
(Male-Presenting, Playable Age Late 30s - 40s) • Pop Bari/Tenor Bb2-G4
Connor and Zoe’s father. Stoic, pragmatic, and emotionally guarded, Larry processes grief differently than his wife. He values honesty and struggles with the narratives forming around Connor’s death. Beneath his reserved exterior is a father grappling with regret and the limits of understanding his child.
