Dean is a chartered psychologist (BPS) and Chartered Coaching Psychologist (BPS). He teaches aspects of Criminal and Forensic Psychology, and applied psychology in the Department of Psychology, Edge Hill University.
As an applied psychologist, Dean is interested in exploring and understanding issues across the Criminal Justice System. His research has focussed on the evaluation of alternative prison programs and he has published on the usefulness of arts-based prison activities with different groups of individuals in prison. This work led to exploring the needs of the ageing prison population.
Dean also conducts research around aspects of sexual identity, orientation, religious belief, psychological health and victimisation.
He currently leads a team of researchers, evaluating the West Midlands Violence Reduction Partnerships approaches to preventing and reducing violent crime.
