Although the Lighthouse began as a manufacturing company - supplying the Boeing company and the federal government with materials and machinery since it was founded - the Lighthouse for the Blind “has always included employment support and a variety of social services, in addition to employment opportunities” (Edwards 2014, 69). The organization currently employs over 270 individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities. In addition to employment, the organization offers courses on computer training, braille training, guide dog training, and DeafBlind community engagement. The organization utilizes an in-house interpreting department to provide communication access to DeafBlind individuals.
By providing DeafBlind individuals with meaningful and applicable job skills and self-sufficiency training, the Lighthouse for the Blind actively empowers DeafBlind individuals to be independently successful in careers that provide livable wages. Through this organization’s advocacy, DeafBlind individuals in the Seattle, Washington area are provided with relevant resources, skills, and knowledge to pursue leadership opportunities in various job fields. The Lighthouse for the Blind’s mission statement embodies their approach: “We empower people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities by creating diverse, sustainable, and meaningful employment opportunities.”
