The license for this font is the SIL OFL license. This license does not allow us to redistribute derivative versions of the font without wholesale name changes inside and out of the font. Originally designed for industrial uses, the first DIN-type fonts were a simplified design that could be applied with limited technical difficulty. Due to the design's legibility and uncomplicated, unadorned design, it has become popular for general purpose use in signage and display adaptations. Many adaptations and expansions of the original design have been released digitally.[4][5]

With the popularity of the DIN fonts, with their minimal, modern design, several designers and companies have released their own interpretations and adaptations, often adding new weights such as light or extra-bold, and italics, causing a range of digital interpretations to exist.

Microsoft created custom digitizations of both Mittelschrift and Engschrift versions of DIN 1451 in 2013, but this version was never released publicly. In 2016, a version was released as Bahnschrift, as Microsoft's first ever Open Type variable font.[26] The Bahnschrift source was completely rebuilt from the ground up by Aaron Bell of Saja Typeworks and was expanded in weight, character set and manual hinting.[27] It supports Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, currency symbols, and some Coptic. It was first included in Windows 10 version 1709, and is primarily being used as the user interface font for Xbox software.[28][29]

This is legal because DIN 1451 is a product of the German government, and so is in the public domain -- only the individual interpretations of it by various font foundries are protected and copyrighted. Thankfully Peter Weigel traced it for us!

If you have access to Windows fonts, the recently announced Bahnschrift looks to be Microsoft's interpretation of the DIN outlines. In some time it will be available on many computers running Windows and could well be a good, free and close representation of what paid DIN fonts offer.

John's suggestion of Abel seems good, too. I haven't compared the fonts very closely, but it's got a DIN feel to it at non-display text sizes with a character width sitting somewhere between Engschrift and Mittelschrift.

DIN typeface gets its name from Deutsches Institut fr Normung (German Institute of Standardization), and it was developed in 1931 from the font created in 1906 by the Preuische Bahnverwaltung (Prussian Railway Administration) for its own use.

Engschrift and Mittelschrift are still used to this day, with only minor changes, and are also used outside of Germany as road signs. Breitschrift was used for locality name signs, but was discontinued. Old signs can still be found occasionally. Since November 1, 2000 german car license plates replaced DIN with a specially designed anti-forgery font (FE-Schrift).

Before the german reunification, DIN was the standard authority in West Germany, so DIN 1451 was a West German standard. The East German standard counterpart was TGL 0-1451 and this is the font modeled after that standard. Created by Peter Wiegel.

At the beginning of the 1980s, under the direction of Gnther Gerhard Lange, the Berlin type foundry, Berthold, developed a version of the standardized typeface for phototypesetting. This was before Linotype and Adobe cooperated in 1990 to produce the first digital publication of PostScript fonts, which were defined in the standard as the medium and narrow versions.

We believe there are still colors missing in the DIN font spectrum. As a Berlin-based foundry, we feel its our calling to bring out these nuances in order to strengthen its vitality. And where better place to rethink and reimagine this German original than in the city of its origin. At the same time, we want to give a dynamic answer to a dynamic world. To achieve this, we started with the original construction and combined the requirements of the digital world with a modern idea of the German art of engineering.
