Nearly 40 years after the construction of Roosevelt's pool, a new wave of technology pressed upon the President to create a work space for the media. President Richard Nixon arranged for the construction of a press briefing room above the old pool to accommodate the growing demand for television news. Since 1970 the White House press corps has assembled in a small theater to listen to the White House press secretary's briefings and reports. The doors opening to the Rose Garden allow the members of the media quick access to outdoor events.

Renovation highlights included improved media work space with new work stations and briefing seating. Cooler, energy efficient lighting was installed, along with interactive media screens behind the Press Secretarys podium. The room was also re-wired with more than 500 miles of fiber-optic cable.

The James S. Brady Press Briefing Room is a small theater in the West Wing of the White House where the White House press secretary gives briefings to the news media and the president of the United States sometimes addresses the press and the nation. It is located between the workspace assigned to the White House press corps and the office of the press secretary.

In 1969, to accommodate the growing number of reporters assigned to the White House, President Richard Nixon had the indoor swimming pool, which had been installed by the March of Dimes for Franklin D. Roosevelt, covered and turned into press offices and a lounge that could double as a briefing room.[2][3]

In December 2005, the White House announced the intention to renovate the aging Press Briefing Room and cramped press corps offices.[5] On August 2, 2006, the final briefing was held, and President George W. Bush hosted several previous press secretaries at a closing ceremony and there was some hesitation and concern about whether the press would be allowed to return to the White House.[6][7] In the interim, the White House Conference Center was used as temporary location for press conferences.[8]

President Bush reopened the renovated room in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the morning of July 11, 2007. He held his first formal press conference in the new briefing room the next day, following the release of a report on the progress of the Iraqi government.[9] The modernization cost nearly US$8.5 million. Of that sum, $2.5 million was funded by the media, and the remainder was funded from tax revenue. Each correspondent's seat was priced at $1,500. Beneath the current press room lies the former White House swimming pool that has since become a computer server room.[10][11]

There will be 60 chairs for reporters in the room. The seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Only one seat per news organization is authorized.

Wi-Fi will be available in the Press Briefing Room. A screen in the foyer in the 2D972 entrance will have the new password.

The briefing will be livestreamed on Defense.gov, Twitter and Zoom. It will also air on Channel 2 in the Pentagon. See call in information below.

The room has 2 high-definition projectors and stereo audio. 4 wireless microphones (both lavalier and hand mics are provided) along with 4 inputs for wired microphones fed to ceiling speakers & listening assistance system. Press feeds are provided at the front & rear of the room.

The height adjustable rolling teaching console allows users to sit or stand and has AV system touchpanel controller, document camera, keyboard & mouse for the classroom Mac/PC computer, along with HDMI & wireless connections for laptops.

Students and CFI's utilize the briefing rooms for pre/post flight briefing with access to: current maps and charts, a computer for access to current Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) information, meteorological information, communications to ATC and the operations room, and flight safety information related to flights.

Industry Partners may elect to sponsor a briefing room through a philanthropic commitment spanning a set number of years. The gifts will be directed to the Aeronautics Advancement Fund, a fund that supports the greatest needs of our Aeronautics programs. In recognition of this commitment, sponsors will have the opportunity to name a briefing room for a 10-year period.

Briefing Room sponsors will be invited and encouraged to interact with our students as industry partners at career fairs, industry events, mock interviews and more. Sponsors may also provide corporate branding items for the walls in their briefing room if desired.

The President. Well, aren't we overwhelmed by the grandeur of the place? First, let me welcome all you orphans home. You know, we sort of missed you. It's been quiet over here, kind of like when the kids go back to school. [Laughter] You know, of course, this press room is still built over a swimming pool. Now, it isn't true, however, that the floor has been hinged-

Although this press room is often filled with lightheartedness, I don't need to stress the serious and essential role you play in our democracy. The public depends on you to keep them informed about what we're really doing here and expects you to keep an eye on the Presidency. And, Sam, that doesn't mean you can put a ladder up to the third floor windows. [Laughter]

As happy as we are about reopening today, we are even more elated by the presence of a man who truly belongs in this room, a man whose courage has been an inspiration to all of us. And I'm proud that Jim Brady is my Press Secretary. Jim, we're all waiting for the day that you're back for good. [Cheers]

The President. Jim says he is, too. So, in dedicating these new facilities, let me just say that I hope this room is always filled with as much integrity and good humor as Jim Brady has brought to it. And now, I've been looking forward to cutting this ribbon. I've been practicing all morning on Ed Meese's tie. [Laughter]

The ribbon-cutting ceremony began at 12 noon in the Briefing Room at the White House, which had been closed for repair and renovation since August. During the 3-month period, reporters and several White House staff members were moved to the Old Executive Office Building, where the daily press' briefings were held.
