Our Coalition Members and Supporters

At 9% of the population, DC has the largest percentage of residents who openly identify as LGBTQ in the country. However, a blind eye has been turned to some of the most at risk. In an effort to raise awareness and address some of these unmet needs, a coalition of 20+ LGBTQ-serving organizations have come together to represent a united voice.

Wanda Alston Foundation

The Wanda Alston Foundation's (WAF) mission is to eradicate homelessness for LGBTQIA2S+ youth and to ensure that LGBTQIA2S+ youth have access to services that improve their overall quality of life. Our mission is achieved through advocacy and extensive programming. The WAF opened its doors in 2008 as the only housing program in Washington, D.C., solely dedicated to offering pre-independent transitional living and support services to LGBTQIA2S+ youth ages 18 to 24 who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Our facilities are located in Wards 7 and 1, and we serve clients from all eight wards. The WAF advocates for increased resources for youth while providing full-service programs, including housing, case management, life skills training, linkages to social services, medical care, mental health services, connection to employment or school opportunities, and capacity-building assistance from other community allies.

In addition to our transitional housing program, we recently opened the Wanda Alston Counseling Center (WACC) to provide culturally congruent services to LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in the D.C. area who are survivors of intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault (IPV/SA). The Wanda Alston Counseling Center is based around queerness and inclusivity, with attention to homelessness and the particular vulnerabilities to intimate partner violence and domestic violence that the LGBTQIAS2+ community experiences. The counseling center provides no-cost, trauma-informed mental health care and support for those experiencing IPV/SA.

#DecrimPovertyDC

Through ongoing advocacy, we aim to replace carceral systems with harm reduction-oriented systems of care that promote the dignity, autonomy, and health of people who use drugs, sex workers, and other criminalized populations.

As a coalition, we are leading a legislative campaign calling on the District of Columbia to end the criminalization of drug use and possession, and instead address collateral consequences of drug convictions and invest in evidence-based public health approaches that dignify and support people who use drugs. The war on drugs has enabled law enforcement to harass, arrest, prosecute, deport, incarcerate, and even kill people – targeting Black, Latinx, and under-resourced communities in D.C. at vastly disproportionate rates. The impact extends far beyond the criminal legal system, as people face an array of punishments in employment, housing, education, immigration, child welfare, and public benefits – all of which can trap people in poverty. We want to see the D.C. Council introduce and pass our legislative proposal to transform D.C.’s drug laws and invest in a health-focused structure for people struggling with drug misuse and/or people negatively impacted by previous drug convictions.

Joseph's House

Since 1990 Joseph’s House has housed and served DC’s most vulnerable residents, providing care, understanding, and kindness to those who have nowhere else to go. Joseph’s House was originally founded to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support for men dying of AIDS. As HIV diagnoses saw longer timelines for care, Joseph’s House expanded to provide care to all genders and began housing individuals experiencing homelessness with terminal cancer. We also provide transitional support for residents with HIV whose health improves while at Joseph’s House and ongoing support for former residents to help them maintain their health and well-being. Our mission is to provide and coordinate holistic care for adults experiencing homelessness living with HIV/AIDS and terminal cancer, supporting them on their life’s journey by honoring dignity, offering companionship, and promoting justice. We seek to bridge the wide health disparities of care our residents have received both as unhoused individuals, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. As one of the only dedicated respite centers in Washington, DC, we provide a unique level of no-cost intensive and personal care that does not exist elsewhere.
