This Evening of Excellence will showcase three very talented groups. Two school choirs and one made of Educators from across Jamaica.
deCarteret College High School Choir was formed in September 2009 consisting of SATB sections with about forty members. This choir was trained and directed by Mr. Rohan Walcott and Mrs. Tomlinson Morgan Music teachers of deCarteret College. That same year the choir entered the Television Jamaica Altogether Sing Choir Competition and was placed 2nd in the Island. In 2010 the choir entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Festival of the Arts and was awarded Gold and Silver Medals for the categories entered.
In 2011 the choir was still aiming for the championship of the Television Jamaica Altogether Sing Competition and therefore entered the competition once again. This time we were placed 2nd in the island of Jamaica again. The choir enjoyed entering these competitions so much that it was motivated to enter the JCDC festival of the Arts Competition once again in 2012; again the choir was awarded with gold and silver medals and best classical and Negro spiritual high school choir. This lead to a stronger determination to win the coveted Television Jamaica Altogether Sing Competition and so the choir entered again in 2013. This time around the choir won the competition acquiring the title and the prestigious trophy.
In 2016 the choir entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Festival of the Arts Competition with two pieces a classical and a Negro spiritual. The deCarteret College High School Choir again won the title of best High School classical and Negro Spiritual choir and two gold medals. The school choir continues to strive for excellence and thus entered the World Choir Games in South Africa in 2018 where they were awarded a silver diploma in the open competition category.
Following this great achievement, the choir entered the JCDC festival of the arts competition in 2019 and was awarded eight gold medals and one silver medal in the parish finals. In the final stage of the competition (national finals) the choir was awarded six national awards being highest in the respective categories. Mr. Walcott is now in the preparation mode for the choir games to be held in Belgium next year July 2020. The choir is now spearheaded by Mr. Christopher Nembhard who has arisen to take up the mantle left in his hands.
The internationally renowned Glenmuir High School Choir (GHSC) has been one of the leading high school choirs in the island for decades. Having copped countless trophies at the JCDC Music Festival, to being handed the keys to the city of Cincinnati, the GHSC, under the current leadership of musical guru, Mr. Andre Taylor, continues to make strides.
Founded in 1958, by Mrs. D.V. Brown, the then dubbed “Glenmuir High School Concert Choir”, performed from the repertoire of mainly Negro-Spirituals and Classical pieces. In the 70’s Mr. J. Leo Whyte, a talented music teacher, assumed leadership of the choir and subsequently introduced hymns, folk songs and madrigals to the repertoire. He, of course, stayed true to the much-loved Classical pieces, especially Latin pieces that the students performed effortlessly. Under his spirited leadership, the choir performed in Cincinnati, Germany, Austria and England.
In 1998, Mrs. Marjorie Henry saw it fit to create the “Glenmuir High School Festival Choir”, as she was determined not to let the festival tradition of the choir waste away. For consecutive years, the festival choir topped the JCDC and was a force to be reckoned with. Apart from performing at events such as the Prime Minister’s Youth Awards, they were invited to perform in Vermont, USA as part of a cultural exchange programme, and then in Bahamas as part of their fundraising exercise, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
Both choirs continued to make waves nationally and internationally when tragedy struck. The death of J. Leo Whyte, coupled with the retirement of Mrs. Henry rocked the core of both choirs. It was then that Mrs. Dorine O’Connor assumed leadership of both choirs. Now combined, the infamous ‘Glenmuir High School Choir’ was birthed. This choir kept both repertoires alive and was soon known for its dramatic and theatrical pieces, including their annual production, “Ajoyo”. They were also blessed to have been led by alumni Joel Edwards, arranger and gifted musician, as well as Mark Bradford, talented vocalist and musician.
For a brief spell, absent a musical director, the choir was self-led by the persistent and capable student leaders, who taught choreography and vocals to the junior members. Despite the absence of a musical director, the quality of their performances never waned. After some time, Mr. Everton Clarke, musician extraordinaire, assumed leadership of the choir for a few years.
In August of 2021, the choir has since been rebirthed, with new voices and many fresh faces. The Glenmuir High School Choir has since arisen from the ashes of online school and, with the passion being injected by the dedicated and determined Andre Taylor, they continue to produce top tier performances. It is safe to say that the future of this talented group of youngsters remains bright.
LA MUSICACIÓN COMPAGNIE (French translation: the musication company) is a dynamic group of educators who sing and play music. Our members are from all over Jamaica, and as the parishes vary, so does the repertoire of this Performing Arts Group. We believe in excellence through music education as practitioners, and we also believe in enjoying what we do with our talents as we share them with the nation and by extension the world. The very unique thing about education is that we are constantly learning and the unique thing about music is that we are constantly creative in our making of it. Therefore, what we learn, we share so that others may benefit from the joy through the learning experience as well.
