Our Events
Our Events
DCD_MHP held numerous events in cooperation with various clubs and organizations in school. Our goal was to implement our protective factors, self care and peer support, in our fellow peers' lives, while also spreading awareness on our risk factors, academic pressure and social factors. Through these interactive events, we were able to engage our community and expand our following. Below we've included some insight on our most significant events and collaborations.
Making Mindful Posters
January 31st 2023
DCD_MHP took to instagram for our event, Making Mindful Posters. We posted a story on instagram challenging our viewers to collaborate and create posters they felt embodies mindfulness and maintaining a positive mental health. Our peers were able to come together and dm us numerous posters. We then created our own poster with our slogan, Mind Over Matter. We posted a poll on instagram with all of the posters so our viewers could vote on which was the best. The winner was given the opportunity to have their poster hung up throughout the school. This event helped us implement peer support in the lives of our fellow peers as they collaborated, while also promoting self care in the messages of the posters. Thankfully, the team at DCD_MHP took the win on this one.
Homeroom Education Day
The team at DCD_MHP took multiple days to go around the school conducting short informal presentations to many homerooms and introducing our social media campaign. We were able to spread awareness to our risk factors, academic pressure and social factors, by establishing an open discussion with fellow classmates to remove the stigmas surrounding these terms. This event also coincided with our protective factors, peer support and self care, as we showed our peers numerous methods to maintain their mental health, while encouraging them to discuss their thoughts with each other during the presentation. Finally, this event not only gave us an opportunity to discuss and implement our risk+protective factors in our peers' lives, but it also allowed to expand our audience within our community and promote our various social media accounts.
MHP Reset Day
The day our school resumed after Thanksgiving break, the boys set up shop in our school's Innovation (computer) Lab at 8 am sharp for MHP Reset Day. We held this event to provide our peers with a safe and calming environment, along with an opportunity to relax, reflect, and ease into the school week. We knew coming back to school would be stressful for many, especially because of mid-term exams coming up. This was a breeding ground for academic pressure, one of our identified risk factors, that can interfere with students' mental health. To combat this, we invited our peers to enjoy snacks like donuts while playing board and card games, activities known to increase brain stimulation and help maintain positive mental health. Students were able to play games together and hang out with their fellow peers, exemplifying peer support. Finally, we encouraged everyone that showed up to write one thing that helped their mental health during break on a sticky note, shown in the image with the board to the right.
Knitting with Pre-Med
In collaboration with the Pre-Med club, dcd_mhp held a a community event inviting students to knit and just enjoy each others company. This event encouraged community building and we aimed for it to teach students the importance of peer support. These blankets were then donated to the less fortunate, underlining the significance of helping others/philanthropy, which is another factor we found beneficial to one's mental health. We chose knitting because it's an activity that can contribute to upholding mental health as it's proven to reduce anxiety and relax the mind.
Sticky Notes of Gratitude
Our "Sticky Notes of Gratitude" event, consisted of students writing positive messages and leaving them around the school in hopes someone read them and it put a smile on their faces. The followers that took pictures of their sticky notes and sent them to us had the opportunity to be featured on our instagram and website. This event reinforces our "peer-support" protective factor, as this encouraged students to spread kindness to their peers and create a more mindful environment. It was an event part of our Week of Wonderment, which will be explained further in depth.
Compliment Cups
Our goal with our "Compliment Cups' was to spread positivity and ease social anxiety among students. During the school day, we spread these cups around common areas in the school and left a sign for students to take and write messages to other students. This event promotes peer support and combats our Risk Factor social anxiety because students will feel at ease knowing that there are people willing to support them without even knowing who they are.
Fundraising Bake Sale
DCD_MHP held a bake sale in their school to raise money for the SAM Foundation. Our instagram was used to promote this event. We hoped for this to raise awareness and generate funds for an organization that was genuinely interested in making a change in the world of Mental Health.
Heart Check Volunteering
On this day, DCD_MHP volunteered to help set up and carry out the Student Heart Check at Romulus high school. Student Heart Check is a public health initiative done exclusively by Beaumont Hospital to screen high school athletes for heart conditions prior to their participation in sports. This is an event that occurs twice every year and done by the kindness of these physicians' hearts as it's completely free and accessible for all in the area. In our research, we found there to be a correlation between health disease and the developing of mental health conditions, which is one of the reasons why we decided to volunteer at this event. Not only that, but the team at DCD_MHP was able to gain real-life experience on how doctors deal with patients, learning skills that can be used when talking to those suffering with anxiety and other mental health diseases.
Beaumont Children's Hospital Fundraiser
DCD_MHP in collaboration with the HOSA club made an announcement encouraging students and faculty at Detroit Country Day High School to donate coloring supplies for the local Beaumont Children's Hospital. This event and collaboration fall under our Peer-Support protective factor. Using our resources, we came together to create good for the community around us. This initiative not only exemplifies our commitment to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment within our school but also extends our reach to those in need in the wider community. By donating coloring supplies to Beaumont Children's Hospital, we aim to bring a little more joy and color into the lives of children facing medical challenges. This effort reflects our belief that small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of others .
Lecture/Q&A with the SAM Foundation & the Pre-Med/HOSA Clubs
The team at DCD MHP, brought Julie Smith and Nicole Goggans, the founders of the S.A.M. foundation, to meet the Pre-Med and HOSA club. We held an informal lecture with an interactive Q & A at the end. Julie and Nicole discussed the origin and message of the S.A.M. Foundation along with the numerous events they hold. Julie also talked about the "Education" sector of the foundation, which serves to teach people of all ages how to deal with those suffering with mental health disorders, specifically suicide. She also touched upon the importance of risk and protective factors in her own campaign and related them to those of ours. Overall, this event helped garner peer support and teach our community methods of self-care, aligning with our protective factors. Finally, Julie and Nicole discussed academic pressure/social factors and how they lead to mental health disorders like suicide, raising awareness on our risk factors.
Collaboration
DCD_MHP partnered with numerous school clubs, corporations outside of school, and experts in the field. These collaborations include partnering with the Mens Sana Club to create the Relaxation Station in our school's library. MHP also brought our school's HOSA and Pre-Med Clubs together to listen to live lectures by professionals and plan an event where our peers take a break and knit blankets for the homeless. We also interviewed experts in the field on our podcasts like Julie Smith, organizer of the S.A.M. Foundation, and Jared Horvath, renowned neuroscientist, educator, and writer.
Relaxation Station with Mens Sana Club
DCD_MHP partnered with our school's Mens Sana Club, an organization at our school dedicated to maintaining the well-being of students and encouraging positive mental health. Together, we created the Relaxation Station, an area in our school's library. At any time throughout the school day, students can go into the room to lie down on a bean bag, work together with their classmates, draw or color, or even sleep. Focusing on the aim of our campaign, anxiety among high schoolers, we added a coloring book, especially for anxiety relief. The room is dimly lit with windows that can be covered by blinds to aid in setting the relaxed vibe of the room, encouraging mindfulness and positive mental health.
Planting with the Botany Club
DCD_MHP recently collaborated with the school's Botany Club, a club committed to fostering a love for plant cultivation and environmental stewardship among students Dr. Jackson, a biology teacher at our school, shared her insights on the therapeutic aspects of gardening and its positive impact on mental health. Afterward, students had the chance to get their hands dirty by potting their own plants in the greenhouse. The highlight of the day was the 'Adopt a Plant' initiative, where students could take a plant home, with the aim of nurturing their botanical companion as a practice in mindfulness and stress relief. We hoped that students gained a deeper appreciation for the quiet comfort that plants can bring into our lives.
Knitting & Lectures with Pre-Med Club
First, the boys were able to have Julie Smith, our mental health consultant, but also organizer of the S.A.M. foundation, a corporation dedicated to promoting suicide awareness and combating it, join us for a live lecture on zoom. She effectively presented us with tactics and ways to deal with a suicidal individual, if needed. Additionally, the team at MHP organized a day alongside Pre-Med Club to knit blankets for the homeless. Everyone was able to come together and support our community while doing an activity that allowed for the relaxation of the mind.
Partnership with Julie Smith and the S.A.M Foundation
As mentioned above, Julie is our mental health consultant, and we have partnered with her to create numerous events and also obtain her advice on strategies and next steps for our campaign,. Specifically, the team had her on the podcast to discuss anxiety and its effects on teens in our world. She also came to our school virtually as said previously to talk about her organization, its goals, and how it talks about/deals with the stigmas surrounding mental health and suicide. Julie taught us how to physically and mentally protect our peers from suicide and self-harm through methods of reinforcement, reaching out, and seeking help, among others.
Collaborating with Dr. Horvath
The boys at DCD_MHP also collaborated with Dr. Jared Horvath, a neuroscientist, educator, and published writer with two books, Stop Talking Start Influencing, and 10 Things Schools Get Wrong. Dr. Horvath specializes in the brain and its relation to helping/harming the daily lives and academic performances of students. Along with conducting neurological research, Dr. Horvath travels the world to educate students at the high school and collegiate level. He's been to a large variety of schools ranging from our high school (Detroit Country Day) to the prestigious Harvard Medical School. He came on MHP's podcast: Mind Over Chatter to unpack the problems the boys face within their daily lives and the science behind these issues. He greatly educated us and provided us with not only new information/statistics, but a new outlook on life that helped us look at our campaign and life in a completely different way.
Partnership with Beaumont Hospitals
The team at DCD_MHP worked with Beaumont Hospitals to attend events and gain information regarding our campaign. First, some of our team volunteered for the Student Heart Check, organized and sponsored entirely by Beaumont physicians. Secondly, we organized a fundraiser in collaboration with our HOSA club, asking students and faculty to bring used or new coloring supplies and place them in our bins, which will we then take to the Beaumont's Children Hospital. These events helped us gain first hand experience with how to handle patients and those suffering with not only physical, but also mental health conditions. Additionally we were able to bring our community together and demonstrate how peer support and kindness canmake a big impact on the lives of others
