Catholic Central sets five records en route to CHSL boys swim title

LIVONIA — Records are meant to be broken.
That’s exactly what Novi Detroit Catholic Central did Saturday in winning its third straight CHSL boys swim and dive championship.
The Shamrocks set five new records among seven first-place finishes.

Catholic Central places runner-up in D1 Final
The Detroit Catholic Central swim team had its best performance in a state final on Saturday, scoring 240 points to finish runner-up in the D1 finals at the Holland Aquatic Center.
Holland West Ottawa came in first with 248 points, but the race for the championship was actually decided by .06 seconds. The meet came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. West Ottawa would edge Catholic Central, as West Ottawa finished with a time of 3:05.84, while Catholic Central posted second with 3:05.90. Both teams put up times that ranked top 10 in MHSAA history for the event.

Back To Back League Titles
Detroit Catholic Central Swim & Dive won its second consecutive Catholic League title, earning 549 points for the win. Birmingham Brother Rice placed second with 454.5 points, University of Detroit Jesuit finished third with 378.5 points.
Catholic Central was led by strong relay performances, winning both the 200 and 400 Free relays. Mario McDonald, a Junior, won the 50 Free, setting a school record with a time of 21.13. Junior Captain Conor Brownell took the 100 Free Championship with a time of 47.22, while Sophomore Matthew Kozma topped the field, swimming 1:44.15 in the 200 Free.

LAKE ORION >> The Detroit Catholic Central boys swim team claimed its second consecutive Oakland County championship on Saturday, scoring 314.50 points to earn first place at Lake Orion High School.
Harrison-Farmington finished runner-up for the event with 281 points while Birmingham Brother Rice took third with 255.50.
The Shamrocks won just one event on the day, but consistently had multiple swimmers placing in the top eight of events. The lone winner of the weekend for Catholic Central was senior diver David DeBacker, who won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 427.35.

Catholic Central ends Brother Rice’s 26-year reign as swim champs

The stage was set last Saturday at the Livonia Recreation Center for an epic-proportion clash between two fiercely competitive arch rivals for the Catholic League boys swimming championship. On one side of the pool were the Warriors of Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice, invincible league champions for 26 years in a row. Across from them were the Shamrocks of Novi Detroit Catholic Central, who last won the crown in 1991, when CC’s campus was located in Redford.
