How is it done?
How is it done?
The Garth Englund Blood Center brings everything needed for blood donations: a trained & professional staff, snacks & drinks, and all of the proper equipment. Before you go to the donation site, please make sure to eat something and come well hydrated (starting 8 hours before). Plan for your donation to be about 40-45 minutes for the entire process.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by staff members who will guide you through the process and answer your questions.
· We’ll help you complete health history and consent forms.
· We’ll record your temperature and blood pressure and do a finger-stick test called a hematocrit to check the volume of your red blood cells.
· Your arm will be cleaned with a sterile disinfectant swab, and a needle inserted into a vein on the inside of your elbow.
· The actual blood donation takes 5 to 10 minutes.
· When you’re done, we’ll place a wrap on your arm. You’ll rest for a short time afterwards and enjoy a snack before you go.

If you are unable to donate, a second option is to help us spread the word about the importance of and need for blood donations, either through word of mouth or through social media. Here are some key statistics you may wish to share:
One blood donation can save up to three lives
When you give blood at UCHealth, your donation helps patients across Northern Colorado.
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.
It can take up to two and a half days to test, type, and distribute blood after it’s donated. During an emergency it’s the blood that is already on the shelves that helps save lives.
