Windows 2000 was a modernization of Windows NT 4.0 which brought many of the desktop changes, including Active Desktop, to Microsoft's Windows NT line. Four editions of Windows 2000 were released, Professional, Server, Advanced Server, Datacenter Server. Improvements over NT 4.0 include new Accessibility Options, increased language and locale support, NTFS 3.0, the Encrypting File System and Active Directory. Windows 2000 was first planned to replace both Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 although using the NT kernel for consumer and professional editions would not happen until Windows 2000's successor, Windows XP.

Windows 2000 introduces layered windows that allow for transparency, translucency and various transition effects like shadows, gradient fills and alpha-blended GUI elements to top-level windows.[68] Menus support a new Fade transition effect.

Windows 2000 introduced the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), which is used to create, save, and open administrative tools.[47] Each of these is called a console, and most allow an administrator to administer other Windows 2000 computers from one centralised computer. Each console can contain one or many specific administrative tools, called snap-ins.[47] These can be either standalone (with one function), or an extension (adding functions to an existing snap-in). In order to provide the ability to control what snap-ins can be seen in a console, the MMC allows consoles to be created in author mode or user mode.[47] Author mode allows snap-ins to be added, new windows to be created, all portions of the console tree to be displayed and consoles to be saved. User mode allows consoles to be distributed with restrictions applied. User mode consoles can grant full access to the user for any change, or they can grant limited access, preventing users from adding snapins to the console though they can view multiple windows in a console. Alternatively users can be granted limited access, preventing them from adding to the console and stopping them from viewing multiple windows in a single console.[89]

RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode dinger73 (TechnicalUser)29 Jun 01 16:50You CAN boot to DOS using a special boot disk that can read NTFS hard drives. I can't remember what the name of the boot disk app was called. I read on Techrepublic.com . You might try searching through their archives for it. If I can find it, I'll post it on here for ya. RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Calgarian (TechnicalUser)29 Jun 01 17:42You have two options:

(1) As far as I know, the DOS NTFS route gives you read only access to your hard disk.

(2) Linux boot disks with NTFS support will give you write access to NTFS - but my last experience with Linux NTFS drivers resulted in a completely corrupted volume - but that was accessing NTFS volumes from native Linux.

So, back to the original question - why do you want to access Win2K from DOS mode?

RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode dinger73 (TechnicalUser)29 Jun 01 18:52I found the 3rd party utility I was thinking of earlier. It's called NTFSDOS which can be downloaded(read-only version) or ordered (full read-write access) from www.sysinternals.com

I, too, wonder why you would need to boot to DOS, but I just can't resist a good challenge and I hate to be told 'you can't' RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)29 Jun 01 23:19I was trying to customize the start button. In such case i need to boot in dos prompt inorder to change the explorer.exe. As it is known when it is booted with windows it uses the explorer.exe so no modification can be done with the file. RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode PAndersen (Programmer)2 Jul 01 04:44If you modify the Winlogon part of the registry

and select a shell different from explorer.exe

to be started, then it should be possible to

edit the original shell in the next session. RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)27 Jul 01 00:38Hi all !

I need to boot windows 2000 in dos too flash my bios..

I have ntsf file system.

Thanx =)

Best regards Dr Dave RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode a073235 (MIS)27 Jul 01 17:34Here's the Microsoft method of creating a bootable NTFS disk with read/write access to the partition without using a third-party utility:

DrDaveSWE - Note that many BIOS programs will not work from a bootable NTFS floppy. In any case, most BIOS updates also don't need to access the physical disk - only memory - and thus don't care if it's NTFS or FAT. You should be able to do a BIOS update from ANY Win9x bootable disk, and wherever you downloaded this form should have said something to this effect...?

RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)30 Aug 01 17:47Rajan,

Just go into task manager and goto processes and End Process to explorer.exe but make sure before you do that you have command prompt open to rename it with the modified one. Then once you have renamed it go into task manager again and goto applications and do Add New Task and go to explorer.exe and there you go. new start button. RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)31 Aug 01 03:32For me, the main reason to access a NTFS partition from dos, was to recover some data before a big format :]

Not so hard to imagine.

L8er, enjoy,

Gen RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)4 Sep 01 11:51Dos this mean the Dos based programs such as FOXPRO DOS 2.5 will stop working altogether? Does anyone have any experience using the Foxpro Dos application in Win 2000?

Thanks.

RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)12 Sep 01 22:58A Win 2000 computer crashed... basically there is a Kernel Exception Error 01E, so I can't even get to safe mode. Repair / ERD did not work at all. 2000 tries to load, but reboots on exception error. I have to just get rid of a file that is causing the errors, but I have nothing that will boot from a: and Read/Write NTFS. What does it?... without buying any 3rd party stuff

RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode tlcscousin (TechnicalUser)12 Sep 01 23:20Boot and pick F8 when available and pick last known good configuration. RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)12 Sep 01 23:38Tried F8 and "Last Known Good Config". Tried everything else also, like ERD and Recovery Console and repairing off 2000 Pro OS CD... RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)15 Sep 01 17:33Create an NTFS boot floppy

 1.DISKCOPY the first Setup Disk.

2.Delete all files on this new Boot Floppy.

3.Copy NTDETECT.COM and BOOTSECT.DOS from your root to the floppy(If DOS is installed).

4.Copy NTLDR from your root to the floppy, renaming it SETUPLDR.BIN

5.COPY NTBOOTDD.SYS from your root to the floppy.

6.Copy your C:\BOOT.INI RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode christopheollier (Programmer)22 Sep 01 06:19You can use a win9x bootdisk to boot in dos mode (for bios flashing, I suppose). Images are available here :

RE: How to boot Windows 2000 professional in dos mode Guest (visitor)(OP)25 Sep 01 18:57I recently had the same problem (needed to have a pure DOS OS and am running Win2K). I suugest using a DOS boot floppy. a number of boot images can be found at the following website:

Also, there is a bootdisk creator on the win2k CD in a "BOOTDISK" directory.

Hope that helps. I wasted a whole evening trying to figure that out...

You dont have to go through all this heartache to flash your BIOS

Here is how:

1-Download BIOS from the manufacturer

2-Click on downloaded file to install on floppy

3-Restart with floppy in the drive

4-Respond to prompts confirming BIOS upgrade

5-Reboot system with diskette removed

NOTE:Boot sequence in BIOS must be first changed to drive A: if it defaults to primary hard drive or CD-ROM

APTA cannot have a direct impact on postprofessional DPT programs, which are configured, administered, and evaluated by their respective institutions of higher education on the basis of their own educational prerogatives. However, APTA completed and approved a 4-phased plan in 2000. The APTA Board of Directors' plan supporting the transition DPT is intended to serve the interests of postprofessional DPT programs and learner/applicants. A task force was appointed to oversee the plan's 4 phases and ensure its implementation. The fourth phase was dependent on transition DPT programs' need for faculty. Programs have been able to function without implementing the fourth phase of providing a faculty course/content pool. be457b7860
