dzerom@fullerton.edu I am an academic with research and teaching interests in analytical and statistical aspects of data science. While my doctoral training is in Statistics, I also have graduate training in both Econometrics and Operations Research.I have had extensive experience developing and teaching courses on business analytics, data science, management science, statistics and forecasting at all levels including Ph.D. programs in such institutions as the School of Business at the University of Alberta and the College of Business and Economics at the University of Amsterdam. In all my courses, the central theme is managerial decision making, and the emphasis is to train students to leverage data (also big-data - structured and un-structured) with the goal of extracting or identifying relevant information. Although mastery of analytics tools (such as Python, R, etc.) is important, I focus more on developing analytical thinking for problem solving. I use recent tools in generative AI such as code co-pilot to facilitate problem-solving focused analytics. Some of my graduate students have successfully participated in Kaggle data science competitions.
The goal of my research is to develop analytical capabilities for use by practitioners who seek to solve business/economic-driven problems. To that end, I conduct both methodological and inter-disciplinary research. The methodology research focuses mainly on statistical features selection and prediction problems in the presence of ultra-high dimensional data. Recent results on these topics have appeared in such outlets as the Journal of Multivariate Analysis, the International Journal of Forecasting and the Journal of Non-Parametric Statistics. The interdisciplinary research focuses primarily on the interplay of Statistics and Management Science. Recent results on this theme have been published in such outlets as the Journal of Operational Research Society, Networks and Spatial Economics and Operations Research Letters. Some of my past extended research visits include the department of Statistics at Iowa State University and department of Mathematics at University of Montpellier France. My past and current co-authors include Jan De Gooijer, Zvi Drezner, Daoji Li, Ofir Turel, Armann Ingolfsson, and Ali Gannoun.
