2025-2026 Season Information

The mission of Davis County Clays is to introduce and educate youth in firearm safety along with a competitive shotgun shooting sport program. We are members of UTYESS (Utah Youth Education in Shooting Sports).  This program provides various disciplines in shotgun sports and will offer plenty of opportunities to experience them during this upcoming year. Our program is open to all school-age boys and girls in elementary school through high school. Participants must be physically, mentally, and emotionally mature enough to participate in a safe and responsible manner

Our team primarily focuses on trapshooting, but we will also shoot skeet and sporting clays in practice and at tournaments.

JOINING THE TEAM

PRACTICE

Practice is held on Wednesdays from September 10, 2025 - April 29, 2026 at the Bountiful Lion’s Club Range

Practices will be broken up into two sections- Group 1 will start at 4pm, All Team Meeting at 4:45pm, Group 2 will start immediately following the team meeting.

After the first few weeks of practice, you will be placed in a squad with 4-5 other athletes. You will be practicing with this same squad for the season.

**During the winter months (December - February) we may be practicing on Saturday mornings instead, depending on the weather. Your squad coach will work out a schedule with you.

All team members must maintain a 2.0 GPA. We will be verifying this before tournaments. Those who are planning to get a High School Letter will need to attend at least 80% of practices and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Most practices will include shooting 50 targets. We will also have different trainings based on the needs of the squad. The first few practices will focus on safety, rules, and fundamentals.

Each athlete must pick up hulls and help load the traphouse after shooting.

Cost

Tournaments

There are four big tournaments per year

The cost of each tournmanet depends on how many disciplines you shoot (trap, sporting clays, skeet). The costs range from $40-$260.

Most tournaments are held Friday-Sunday. If you choose not to shoot on Sunday, we will do our best to accommodate your schedule but there is no guarantee.

You will need to purchase lead ammo for these events.

Please wear team apparel at all competitions.

**If you are working towards the High School Letter, or trying to make the State Team, you must attend certain tournaments. Please see HERE for more info.

Many people take camping trailers to the tournaments and our team has a lot of fun playing game and hanging out together! You can also bring golf carts or side by sides to drive around the sporting clays courses.

We will plan a dinner or other team activity at the larger tournaments. There are also usually food trucks, raffles, games, and more.

When competing in tournaments, categories are based on school grade:

Novice Category: 6th Grade and Below

Intermediate Category: 7th - 8th Grade

Junior Varsity Category: 9th -10th Grade

Senior Category: 11th - 12th Grade

College Category:  Any shooter attending college or a trade school

Some of the tournaments we will attend will also have class trophies. Class trophies are based on shooting ability alone, not age.

Fundraising

There are different opportunities to fundraise! We will be holding a gun raffle that you can sell tickets to, you can sell Swig cards, there will be a team yard sale in the summer, and some families put together a raffle to send out to their family and friends. We are here to help you brainstorm ideas to raise money to help cover your costs!

Team Sponsorships

Half of every team sponsorship that an athlete is able to get goes directly to their account, and half goes to the team!

If your sponsor would like their money to go directly to an athlete's fees, and not to the team,  they can still get their logo on the banner, but none of the other incentives apply. (This may be the case for companies owned by parents, if they want their sponsorship money to go directly to the athlete).

Platinum Sponsorship $1500

Gold Sponsorship $1000

Silver Sponsorship $500

Bronze Sponsorship $250

Firearms

Each athlete needs to have a shotgun to participate with the team.  12 gauge shotguns are preferred, but 20 or smaller gauge shotguns are allowed.  20 gauge steel ammo can be purchased through the team, however, tournament (lead) ammo would be your responsibility to obtain.  It is most important that the athlete can safely handle the firearm.  If your child is on the border of being able to handle a 12 gauge shotgun, you should consider that they will build strength and stamina fairly quickly and be able to do well with the 12 gauge.

Overunder style shotguns are the most commonly used, however, semi-autos can also be used.  Pump actions are the most challenging to be able to use for skeet and sporting clay disciplines, but can be used for Trap.

The team has a relationship with a private gun dealer who will find and sell firearms to youth shooters at his wholesale price. In many cases, this could save you a considerable amount of money –  David Jones (801) 369-8707
