Dragging Myself Back to Hell is a 2D platformer where you are a skeleton with a skull that is on fire, capable of igniting torches to light your way. At least in this first taste. Try it in your browser!
My roles in this project:
- game design
- level design
- coding in GDScript
- visual effects
- sound design
In this level the main unique game mechanic is playing with light and darkness. Light up torches to see where to jump next or what to avoid. These torches won't last too long though. Also, the more torches are lit at the same time, the more you can see of the whole level.
This is planned to be the third level in the final game and here we try to shift from crazy fast jumping around to a bit more tactical, deliberate platforming. The player should plan ahead.
There are floating skulls scattered around the level, these serve three purpose:
- a reward for those who like to explore every nook and cranny
- a built-in difficulty system, a collected skull is also an extra life (well, "life")
- something to add replay value for the final game, if you manage to collect and bring all skulls to the end you might get a different ending than the others
In the last couple of months I've been learning how to create games in the Godot Engine and this is my hottest project. It all started when a friend asked me if I wanted to participate in a game jam. I said yes and we made a quirky platformer in just a few hours - which you can check out below. The theme was: "the error is the feature". You've been warned!
Working together with Odd Number of Eyes went so well we decided to continue and make this small prototype to a bigger game. We had so many ideas on how to implement different bugs and glitches into fairly enjoyable game mechanics! Naturally, soon we were building a completely different game with the whole "error is the feature" theme gone. Telling the story through sticky notes also became a thing of the past.
It was soooo good to find out what we actually wanted to do through the initial design and prototyping process. Now we have a skeleton who needs to go backwards - as in from right to left on each level - and whose skull is on fire in one of the levels. Hoping to show more of this soon.
