I would like to introduce you to a set of topics that I have used to guide my life. These are not tied to any particular religion, culture, or ethnicity, and pertain to anyone who wises to use them. All are familiar to you, but as a philosophy and approach to living they may be a source of inspiration as they have been for me. I have no particular purpose in presenting them to you other than to share them...

Let us consider a perspective of joy and happiness that is not tied to extreme goals or someone else’s definitions — or someone else at all, for that matter. After all, it is OUR joy and happiness. We control the entire process — start to finish to start again — over and over, on a daily basis.
I believe our joy and happiness come from our personal Code to Joy. For reference, here is mine.....

Happiness in the Future is a Dream and Happiness in the Past is a Memory. Happiness has Only One Time Zone —the PRESENT.
Although the process of nurturing Inner Joy is a lifelong endeavor, Happiness is Now. And by fostering Inner Joy, your life becomes more consistently filled with Happiness. My recipe for happiness in any timezone....

Kindness has no religion, no creed, no gender, no race, no status, no political affiliation, no plan, no goal, no reward, no title, no role, no sexual or any other preference—nothing that the world considers a descriptor. There is no formula for it, no guidance, no specific scripture, no code, no language, no culture, not even a species—for it is not limited to man, who often struggles with it. Rather, Kindness is selfless Love given in the moment with no expectation for reward, no ego, no anything, and yet it is everything!

Fear is essential to this world, characterizing organisms ranging from the lowly ant to humans. It is part of nature and the consequence of mortality, without which higher lifeforms would never have evolved or existed at all. But it is also in our control. The way we differ from other species is that our brain developed to the point where we can restrain our fears.
Unfortunately for some fear grows into a prison of thought, actions and inactions.

LOVE … what is it and what do I do with it?
I would wager that no two responses to this simple question would be identical if truthfully answered by all the humans on Earth. Why? Because…
Love is personal, yet mutual and only in this paradox is it real.
Love is uniquely singular, yet infinitely divisible—being the only force to defy the laws of mathematics, chemistry, physics and all of science in one....

Wouldn’t you love to possess magic?
But did you know that you already have that power? Each of us does in our power of faith.
Faith enables magic because it is our personal elixir to fear, the common denominator for most of our individual challenges and collective divisions.

Please allow me the liberty to paraphrase a renown lyric by the iconic rock band The Grateful Dead for it is pivotal to message in this post.
The only thing there is to say, every silver lining’s got a Touch of Grace.

If anything can turn lead into gold, it is love and those that share it unconditionally are true alchemists. The world should celebrate them and hold them in high esteem.
Love is alchemy because it creates everything out of nothing, just as its opposites, apathy and hate, turn everything into nothing
Love is alchemy because it creates everything out of nothing,.....

I love paradoxes. Nature and wisdom are peppered with them. They hide great truths in plain sight like moral magicians. Yet few venture to decipher the sagacity behind their riddles.
Differences Unite is one such paradox relevant in today’s world of instant truths and entrenched opinions. Let us explore the powerful paradox that is the title of this post.

One night last week I had dinner with a friend who brought up the subject of Grace. Being a devout man, he inspired this post with a heart-warming tale.
Our discussion around Grace began with a plate of nachos and ended with the mutual agreement that Grace is our choice and ability to connect to our better selves and to a higher power.

If you have ever suffered a heartache due to loss or love gone wrong, you know emotional pain. It can be debilitating, throwing us into depression, ripping at our very soul, creating sensations not unlike drowning in our own skin. It’s awful!
Emotions by their very nature catalyze highs and lows. And love, the strongest of all emotions, creates Mt. Everest peaks and Death Valley lows. Love is a tough teacher, but one of the greatest teachers of all.

Isn’t our plant amazing?
There are so many fascinations, secrets and treasures that it holds; yet, it is but a speck in the vastness of our cosmos. The scale comparison between the two is inconceivably enormous. It Earth was one grain of sand in the entire ocean it would still not do this comparison justice for as far as we can tell our galaxy is one speck of sand in the ocean of the cosmos, and our plant in turn is one grain in the expanse of that galaxy, the Milky Way.

My first encounter with Hope was an annual disappointment. As a child, I hoped for a dog that never materialized four Christmases running. Either Santa was deaf and could not read or hope was overrated, possibly both. This lesson from an early age made me question why Hope would be a Divine Power, when I first encounter the teachings. To me, hope equated to hopeless, a polite term for wishful thinking.

This beautiful fountain is located on the grounds of Elmira College in Elmira NY, not far from Mark Twain’s final residence and resting place. The one-room summer cottage where he penned some of his most famous work has been moved to the college campus. Being a huge Mark Twain fan, I had to see the writing sanctuary of this literary genius. After basking in the awe of the experience, I turned to leave and noticed this angelic fountain which made me ponder:
Are angels real?

Imagine a world without Hope? I cannot for it would be a horrible place devoid of freedom, empty in promise and desolate in happiness. A world were choices had little relevance, if they existed at all. Our hopes touch so many things in our lives that to be hopeless is to be lost.
Hope drives our growth, fosters our core values, defines our direction and provide the wind in our sails.

I love this picture of my youngest daughter eating a watermelon sans her front teeth. If she sees this blog she will probably kill me. But to me this is as simple a definition of happiness as I can ever imagine—no teeth but happy to have a watermelon. I truly believe that kids can teach us adults so much if we let them.
