Note sheets for Jazz chords

Here are the notes for all of the Dominant 7th, Major 7th, and Minor 7th chords. These chords are played with your left hand. The bottom note of every chord (marked 3 or 7) is played with your pinky. The top note is played with your thumb, and middle note(s) are played with your middle or second finger. See if you can start off by learning all of the Dominant 7th chords starting with C7 and work your way around the circle clockwise. When you are ready you can play them with a bass and drum track by clicking on the player below. The music is in 4/4 time and it plays one chord per measure starting with the C chord. It then travels around the circle clockwise, so you will play C7 for four beats, then F7 for four beats, Bb7 for four, Eb7 for four and so on. Then practice your Major 7th chords. Do the same with Minor 7ths circle. You can also download these mp3s by clicking the box in the player. To add your right hand, just choose one of the notes that you are playing with your left hand play it higher in octaves.

Playing the Minor-Dominant-Major 7th chord chart

*It would be best to print these sheets out before attempting this exercise*

Play these chords on the Reference sheet below with the Chord chart on the right and above named, "Minor 7th-Dominant 7th-Major 7th Changes." The chord chart above shows us that we hold the first 2 chords for a measure each, and then hold the maj7 for 2 measures. We are holding these chords out for a specific period of time because when you later play this exercise with the recording, that is how long you will need to hold them.

The first 3 chords on the chord chart above are Cm7-F7-Bbmaj7. When you look at the chords below, you see the first chord is Cm7. Hold that chord for a measure, then look down a staff just below the Cm7 and there is your F7. Hold that for a measure, then go down another staff and there is your Bbmaj7, which you will hold for 2 measures.

Now go to the next 3 lined up chords, Bm7-E7-Amaj7, always holding the first 2 chords for a measure each and holding the maj7 for 2 measures. Then go to the next 3lined up chords... and you get the pattern. Now, you can just read the music below and not have to look at the chart above. When you get good at the chords, PLAY ALONG WITH THE MP3 JUST ABOVE THE REFERENCE SHEET! REMEMBER to hold the first 2 chords for 1 measure each, and the maj7s for 2 measures because that's how it is on the recording.

If you will be playing these chords with a band, then these chords should be played with your LEFT HAND. Then, with your right hand, pick a note that you are playing with your left hand, and play it higher in octaves with your right hand. You should almost always play both hands at the same time.
